Maybe not ready yet (can’t find it on Fdroid), but Berty also looks pretty good, should be down there with Briar:

    https://github.com/berty/berty

“No internet connection required (uses the BLE technology and mDNS)”

Interesting! But I imagine this can only work at close range without internet?

I was wondering the same, reading about BLE seems to be only in your proximity but I’m not entirely sure.

Should probably include whether they’ve been audited and if it’s possible to sign up without phone number or email address.

    Missing Spot-On, Smoke, and more.

Also if they are free, Threema doesn’t have a free plan as far as I’m aware.

Also there’s manyverse/scuttlebutt as a possible addition to the list.

      Great infographic though.

Threema is a paid app, but they have made all client and server code free and open source.

Threema server code is still propietary software.

From this picture, looks like anyone can host a Signal or Wire server.

Not really, that is why there is a line. But the source code of the Signal and I guess Wire servers is available even if it makes little sense to self-host.

Isn’t that a bit different though, not really a messenger app? Someone explained it on here a few days ago. Delta.chat is really a messenging extension to the IMAP/SMTP protocols.

I’m waiting for someone who really understands it to turn up and explain.

Nice to see some XMPP options included.

Only one nitpick, Matrix/element should probably listed as UK based.

I think that’s only for the main instance though. A alternative server can be hosted anywhere since it’s federated.

True, but since Matrix includes some centralized components like the identity server and also tends to replicate channel content on their main instance (happens as soon as someone with a matrix.org account joins any channel regardless of the homeserver), I think it is better to list it as UK based.

Furthermore it does matter where the main developers are based (Conversations: Germany, Movim: Netherlands).

The identity server can also be self-hosted as well as the integration server.

It’s sorely missing any evaluation on the security track record of the platforms. Tox and rocket chat are not to be trusted.

They have a poor track record for security, plus Tox came out from the 4chan crowd and was making very bold claims around security (hinting that it could resist state sponsored attacks) while not having published a threat model nor a security assessment.

I personally use Olvid, their app is not open-source yet but they’ve planned to make it soon.
