i’m glad to see MS getting rekt as much as anyone else, but having people migrate to locked-down-tight phones? eh i don’t like that future.
i miss being excited about tech developments. now i just hope they don’t make it too much worse.
People leaving Windows is good. It’s a shit OS built by a shit company managed by shit people. But to be replaced by a locked up phone/tablet that is solely meant for you to consume, instead of producing is a giant set back. I hope their analysis is BS (probably is) and that people are actually switching to another OS like Linux. Linux Desktop usage has been steadily going up for a couple of years now. One can hope…
Linux will never be close to the usage numbers of Windows sadly
I doubt it’s BS. Those people really care about numbers.
The current tech scape is depressing.
I’m not really surprised. A phone can often be cheaper, can do a lot of the same tasks (and some a PC can’t do without special hardware), and generally has a better warranty program and tons of upgrade promotions. A lot of younger people have never needed to use a PC because they had tablets or phones.
I also think the concept of having to pay for an OS license is kinda stale for MS in particular because they’re money grubbers in so many other ways. Just give out the OS for free to non-enterprise users and call it a day; it’s not like they’re using the revenue to provide desktop support or add customer value.
Good point on the phone. I have a pc mainly because…
- I’m older and I’m just used to it
- I’m an enthusiast and do some programming, specialized apps, etc that don’t and won’t work on phones
- I do pc gaming
- I build my own systems
- I play with linux too
If I just did browser, messaging, mobile apps/games and calls I’d just have a phone.
Well, they do keep making it worse. I just had to reinstall the os because 24H2 broke my whole system. The fact that I can’t translate my Playnite setup over is literally the only reason I haven’t moved to Linux.
As per the article it’s primarily people leaving desktops/laptops and just using smartphones/tablets. Apple is also shrinking.
Apparently it’s coming
Ah yes the infamous “eventually” timetable lol
Playnite
Interesting. Does it support gamepad input? I wonder how does it compare with things like Heroic Games launcher?
Playnite is better except for one thing: it didn’t install games without any use of launchers the last time I tried it a few years ago.
Heroic can download and install any game from EGS, Amazon and GOG without any extra launcher.
I wonder how much of that can be traced back to Broadcom acquiring VMWare?
I’ve been bad and have been using it again the past month cuz of VrChat. Time to work on getting it to run in ubuntu
Those are rookie number. Pump it up nutella.
