Probably because zionists are working so hard to keep the two terms synonymous. That’s not a justificatory reason to continue to actively support a genocidal state politically.
Exactly: The State of Israel and its regime is one thing and the jewish religion a completely different one.
Even more:
Religion != Ethnicity != State != Government
And that ethnicity is not only in this context incrisingly used as a stand-in for race…
Religion != Ethnicity is only partially true in this case, though: The Jewish religion puts quite an effort to viewing all Jews as a singular nation and ethnicity.
But the main sentiment still holds: It is not acceptable to hate Jews in general for the state of Israel committing a genocide.
Claims of Antisemitism have become a pretext to silence political dissent.
What about the Jewish people who oppose the genocide in Palestine? Are they anti-semitic too?
The pro-murdering Palestinian children lobby is working overtime.
There is a kernel of truth in what he says in that attacks on jews have increased significantly, which is horrible and wrong and needs to be fought, no doubt about that at all.
But granting unwavering support to a government that is currently engaged in what the UN has officially determined to be a genocide? That is clearly and horribly wrong. What else has to happen before the german government decides to stop supplying weapons? How much is too much? Like, is there a threshold of civilians killed?
Nie wieder? Hah. Doch. “Nie wieder” ist so gestern!
That’s about what Merz’s words mean, in practical sense.
Merz conflates criticism of Israel’s politics (partially backed by the population) with criticism against the country as in a Jewish state per se. You can be pro-Israel and still condemn the genocide in Gaza. Same as you can still be an American patriot and condemn the actions of the Trump admin.
I don’t like Israel as a Jewish state, but that’s more about my belief that all states should be explicitly secular and ethnicity-neutral.
