Ukraine began its involvement in the Iraq War on 5 June 2003, shortly after the 2003 invasion of Iraq. As part of the Multi-National Force – Iraq, they engaged in combat with Iraqi insurgents. On 9 December 2008, Ukraine formally withdrew its last forces from Iraq, ending its participation in the Iraq War. Prior to the Russo-Ukrainian War, Ukraine’s involvement in the Iraq War was the largest military operation ever performed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Over 6,000 Ukrainians performed military service in Iraq and Kuwait during the war, including a permanent presence of 1,600, with more than 40 Ukrainians wounded and 18 killed in action.

Especially since we literally guaranteed their protection from Russia in exchange for them giving up their nukes.

That is false. You are spreading misinformation. The nukes were not especially useful (being ICBMS unable to target near neighbors), nor were the nukes really theirs to give away or keep. But do go ahead and read the actual Budapest Memorandum. It also grants no such guarantee. So you distort that as well.

The US should be helping Ukraine more, we dont need misinformation for there to be a moral imperative to help them now.

      edit:

To be quite clear who the bad guys here are…

One party to the Budapest Memorandum has directly violated it, Russia. China also likely violates it, given how much they help Russia. The US, on the other hand, has been providing aid to Ukraine, as have UK and France. Theyve sanctioned Russia.

How is it you pretend the ones helping Ukraine are the bad guys in this?

nor were the nukes really theirs to give away or keep.

Whose were they? They had been built and owned by the USSR, but that country ceased to exist.
They were on Ukrainian soil when Ukraine became an independent and sovereign nation.

It is my understanding that the newly formed Russian Federation assumed the debts and obligations of the Soviet Union. For example, Russia has the USSR’s UN Security Council seat. In the case of these missiles, IIRC, they were operated by the Soviet SSR missile corps. Ukraine at the time had no ability to operate or maintain this stockpile.

Are you one of those people who think that assurance != guarantee even though the legal definition of assurance means guarantee?
