[Totally not an oldschool rage comic]

[An IMPORTANT FORM contains a few fields including but not limited to First name, Last name, and Date of Birth]

[A character seems content as they start writing text in the form]

[We now see, the character struggling to fill in the form, as the lines are too short, and having to write their first name in full didn’t leave enough space to write their date of birth]

[The character proceeds to rage]

Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg may have a hard time, but imagine being Leeloo Minai Lekatariba Lamina-Tchaï Ekbat de Sebat

(I got half of this from memory. I shouldn’t be proud of that.)

Japan sucks for this. With a western name it gets transliterated into syllables, and so (esp w a middle name) you’re writing anywhere from 5 to 15+ characters on forms designed for 5 max.

They’re better about it in recent years but it still kinda blows

Funnily enough, this is an issue for me everywhere BUT Japan. I have 5 names, 2 first names and 3 family names, so I run out of space with most forms. But the thing is that I’m half Japanese and when I was in Japan they would just let me ignore my other names and write only my Japanese ones, one of my first names is Japanese and one of my family names too. For example: when my name didn’t fit in my flight ticket, they just told me to write only my Japanese name and throw away the rest lol

I never hated having a middle name until japan. The number of places that desperately need all of your entire name as written on your passport is ridiculous. It’s like “ok you got me, I was absolutely attempting to commit bank fraud because it’s highly likely that the one person named Cornelius Tiberius Wallace trying to get a new bank book for the account I’ve had for 30 years could potentially have a doppelganger named simply Cornelius Wallace living in the same town of 10,000 people. If only there were some other way to identify someone besides their middle name. What’s that? You’ve never had a problem differentiating between the endless parade of Taro Satos that walk through your door? I’m shocked I tell you.”

I’m just surprised they let you leave anything off your name, but I guess in your case they see Japanese name plus a bunch of other fake garbage you use to fool people when existing in gaikokuland, so of course you only need to put your true name on forms.

Oh, you would suffer here in Brazil too, we have no concept of middle names, every name is either a given name or family name.

I was surprised too! Keeping only 2 of my 5 names and saying that is ok felt weird but was quite convenient haha and felt a bit xenophobic too ngl, western names seemed to have no value to them when compared to japanese ones!

This is terrible in Japan. Everyone’s name here consists of a few kanji, while my entire name (yes I have to write the whole thing) is 21 letters. :|

Been fixing forms since I was in customer service in the 90s. Makes me mad because there’s no excuse! Job before last I was in the sole IT guy, yet I’d take the time to redo entire forms, sometimes even for clients, just so they would work right.

OK, in my IT career I’ve sometimes had an ulterior motive, needed to more easily parse their data. :)

How did he suddenly became left handed? I would love to be able to use both hands for such stuff.
