Didn’t play much this week.

Spent few hours on Dark Souls Remastered !

Last week I talked about how I haven’t gotten stuck anywhere, and that’s when I got stuck on the next boss. It was another 2 Boss at once, and that’s kind of my weakness. Don’t know how many times I died there, had to quit the game.

Fortunately, the solution to most such issues in Dark Souls is to just relax and play without panicking. Came back next day and defeated the boss in 2nd or 3rd try.

I should in the latter half of the game, but no idea how much is left. I know of at least 3 bosses that I have kill (narrative reasons), reached the first one and it’s too strong. Checked an online guide and it suggests to come back there later, there are some other unexplored areas and I should go there first. So, doing that now, killing monsters, earning tons of souls and leveling up!

We played some Killing Floor 3 and it was okay. It wasn’t great but not too bad either, but since I don’t play these kind of games I have no idea what the standard is. Overall the consensus was that we won’t be playing it again, so that’s over now.

What about all of you? What have you been playing and/or plan to play?

I just finished Star Trek: Resurgence on Nintendo Switch. Don’t sleep on this game if you want a well-written classic 90s Trek feeling adventure game! Very Tell Tale like.

The graphics aren’t amazing and quicktime events are occasionally awkward, but the story and choice opportunities make it a lot of fun for some casual playtime!

That’s great to hear (not the part about graphics or quick time events being awkward), as a Star Trek fan I want a nice game too. This and Stargate SG-1 are my two top sci-fi franchises that I want good games for.

    Finished Metroid Prime 4: Beyond!

It was nice having a fully free weekend to play this game right after launch. 😀

This is almost certainly going to be a controversial game - it as ton of flaws, everything people are saying about linear dungeons, empty desert, annoying chatty NPC and padding is real. I also agree with most people that this feels more like Zelda than Metroid, with isolated dungeons connected by a big overworld. But you know what? I had a ton of fun with this game and it left me wanting more, which I think is a good indicator the game is still great despite those problems.

I must include some praise for the technical aspects - asides from some occasional long loading times the games runs flawlessly even on Switch 1 and it’s possibly the best looking game in the system. Controls are also spotless, and I love the huge amount of customization options Retro Studios added, from button remapping to allowing motion controls and inverted axis setup independently for different situations (like “regular” aiming, using the control beam, or when riding the bike).

I’d say the 8 rating most sites are giving it is fair. This is not a masterpiece-level game like Prime 1, but is still solid and worth playing.

    Playing Islets!

A game announcement a few months back got me to learn about Kyle Thompson, an indie developer who has worked on a few metroidvanias with really good reviews. Since I’m a fan of the genre I wishlisted his games on the eShop and got Islets and Crypt Custodian during a recent sale.

So far I’m loving it, it’s fun, charming, looks and plays great. I also love the concept of this world, there’s five islands in the sky who used to be one but broke apart, and people are trying to get them to become one again. In gameplay terms this means that you start exploring each island as an isolated map, but eventually they connect with the others and become a bigger unified map which opens more paths to exploration.

The game is not too challenging, but a few bosses still took a few tries to beat. The bullet hell bosses fought while flying in the sky have been generally harder than the ones on-foot, but there’s not a lot of them.

Playing Witch on the Holy Night!

After a long break I finally resumed this game, managing to finish Chapter 4 and first part of Chapter 5. This last stretch of the story was an action-focused part which once again highlights how good the presentation for this VN is, and it finally started to connect the stories between the two main POV characters (Aoko and Shizuki). I ended up my last play session yesterday on a big cliffhanger, so really looking forward to playing more today.

On a related topic, I knew this game takes place in the same universe as Tsukihime and the Fate series, but had not realized until yesterday a certain connection which had me stunned for a minute.

Minor Tsukihime spoiler but tagged just in case

Aoko is the mentor of Shiki, the main character from Tsukihime, and the one who gave him the glasses.

Didn’t have time for Super Robot Taisen Y this week, but will continue with it soon.

I had a ton of fun with this game and it left me wanting more

I haven’t finished it yet, but I had the thought while playing that it’ll be cool to see what they do on Metroid Prime 5 (if it ever comes out). It still feels like Metroid Prime in essence, and the flaws are not that big. I thought the bike was a cool addittion, they just didn’t make it too interesting (at least not yet for me). The tutorial for the bike felt so disconnected, why am I playing F-Zero in Metroid now? And the desert is kind of monotonous. But there’s some potential! And great that they’re trying new stuff.

Most of the original people who worked on the initial trilogy are probably gone from Retro. My understanding is Prime Remastered was a way to get the new folks on the team up to date with development for Prime 4. So now that they have the talent and skill, a new title would hopefully take less than 8 years, and they could build up on what the did for Prime 4 and learn from the feedback. Just wishful thinking! (And please, don’t make another Jar Jar Binks type NPC for the next one).

I agree, there’s a lot of good ideas in Prime 4 that could turn into cool things if developed properly in a future game. Bike is a good example, it’s very fun to ride but also tied to some of the worst aspects of the game like the empty desert and the crystal collection.

The tutorial for the bike felt so disconnected, why am I playing F-Zero in Metroid now?

I forgot to mention but that section felt really out of place. Why the hell does Samus need a driver’s license for a bike in a post-apocalyptic world?

Well, 8 is good. As long as game is fun some flaws can be ignored. Though hope the take the feedback and improve it in next game. Did you use amiibo? Miss anything?

Islets and Crypt Custodian both are in my wishlist, as well as his older game Sheepo and the upcoming one Well Deweller. Haven’t played any of them yet though.

Haven’t checked the spoiler, but should I play Tsukihime before Witch on the Holy Night? The latter is on my wishlist on your recommendation, but not the former.

Didn’t use amiibos, though I’ll admit that some good music would’ve made the desert portions less boring. Ended up with 100% items and 92% scans, which almost certainly is my highest collection rate for any Metroid game. There’s some “Scout Bots” that you can activate late-game that will tell you the locations of items you missed, which is a really nice QOL feature.

Nah, Witch on the Holy Night chronologically takes place before Tsukihime so it’s a good starting point.

Nothing new. Might play some Street Fighter. I only ever played the SNES version in the 90s and SF2 in arcade. I’ll finally see what I missed out on between SF2 and SF6.

      SF6 is a good one.

4 was really good, then 5 just felt meh, haven’t played it much, so can’t really sure why, but 6 feels good again. A lot less characters than 4 though, hopefully we will eventually have a good number.

I don’t have 4 or 5 haha. Just the 30th Anniversary Collection that I just bought on sale and 6.
