"Almost 6,700 American nationals had applied for a visa to work, be with family or study in the Netherlands by the end of November this year, according to immigration service figures, and that is by far the highest number in the past 10 years.
The total is likely to be higher once December, traditionally a busy month, is taken into account, current affairs programme Nieuwsuur reported at the weekend. (…)
Asylum requests submitted via the IND are also rising, with over 60 since the beginning of this year, compared with around 20 in the whole of 2024. Most are from members of the LGBTQ+ community fleeing repression under Trump."
And to those who do move to Europe, remember: The only thing more cringe than nationalism, is nationalism while living in a different country.
I remember a meme/comic where a Romanian and Hungarian guys were calling each other nationalist slurs online, then the comic zooms out showing both of them live in the same apartment building in Berlin.
So it’s not a special problem other nations not affected. Why would we blame these guys whrn we already have similar problems.
thats what russians did, when they fled during the '23 exodus, they still are russian nationalists.
From a Russian living in Europe; nice to learn I’m a nationalist from a lemming who really checked.
But I agree partially: nationalists in immigration are most likely not to change their politics inclination that easily.
Apologies for being sour.
I’m envious. No really, I wish I could pack up my life and move to the Netherlands. It sounds like a fantastic place. I just worry that if so many Americans are fleeing to stable European democracies, that they will eventually become a nuisance and wear out their welcome, regardless of how well behaved some of us might try to be. Our reputation as an ignorant, uncurious and closed-minded people was not entirely unearned.
Y’all need an engineer?
Change your own country with a revolution? Noooooo, go to Europe!
The New Yorker published two stories on the topic, on The Fed Up Americans Leaving the Country:
Ireland … recently announced that the number of Americans who had actually moved there had nearly doubled from 2024 to 2025. A record number of Americans applied for British citizenship from January to March. And thousands have been claiming German and Austrian citizenship thanks to a rule granting the designation to the descendants of Jews who were persecuted by the Nazis. - [Unpaywalled link for the story.]
The long read on How to Leave the U.S.A. tells stories about people who left for European countries.
Every four years, a group of Americans threatens to leave the country. These proclamations tend to take place in early November and involve Canada. No mass exodus occurs. Moving is hard; moving countries is harder. There are families, jobs, pets in the mix. This time around, though, Americans seem to be acting on their desires. The State Department doesn’t keep close track of how many Americans settle abroad, but immigration lawyers told me that the number of people approaching them about it has gone up since Trump was reëlected. “Anecdotally, there’s a noticeable increase,” Sanjay Sethi, an American attorney who recently relocated to Geneva [Switzerland], told me. “What’s been so surprising is how much I’m hearing in my personal life—the desire to leave or get another passport.”
Very interesting not only for U.S. citizens who consider to emigrate. Here is the unpaywalled link.
Still seems low TBH. Though the EU as a whole isn’t particularly receptive to US refugees, anyway, especially the asylum route.
Compared to the 2022 numbers it would put the US into 6 place in terms of migrants countries of origin. Obviously Ukraine was top, but second place Syria was at only 16.276. If you want to look at it another way last year there were 166,143 people born in the Netherlands. So 6,700 Americans making the move is noticeable.
Moving to another country is hard and few people actually do it. So those numbers tend to be low.
Yeah as an American if I thought I reasonably could I would’ve seriously been considering it. For now I moved to a less oppressive part of America and maintain plans to flee if it looks like I won’t just get sent back
wait until trump croaks and nothing “returns to normal” (ie. unsustainable ratfucking), that’s when shit gets real for a lot of people
But President Dump wants more people from Nordic countries to come to America. Somehow the Americans showing up there will have to convince Scandinavian social democratic society that welfare states are for the rich and corporations while the rest get rugged individualism.
