Reputation-based federation Instances you're closer to (interact with more) have higher reputation. Instances with users that your users thumb down/block a lot have lower reputation. Instances that are blocked by your high-rep instances have v low reputation. Once a low threshold is hit, admin is asked if they want to mute/defed from the low rep instance. Reputation isn't global, you can't measure the 'overall' rep of an instance, it's all relative to the instance you're looking from. Thoughts?
I am not totally in favor of this exact idea, but it seems worth thinking further about.
This sort of already exists on other services such as Usenet it’s called the web of trust, where if you don’t like something or it is spam or hate then you mark it as such and it doesn’t show up to other users as much, the more it is marked as bad the less it shows up.
Yeah, in fact this is how up and down voting on this very site works. It just is mostly instance specific and maybe the above idea is a starting point to expand this concept to cross instance federation.
Edit: like the algorithm to calculate how high a post is shown on the feed gets an additional parameter of how much posts in general from that instance are up or down voted (looking from your instance’s perspective only).

Oh yes I like that idea a lot, cross instance would be great!
