I’m totally unrelated news, several months ago the US stated they will start automatic draft registration in December 2026 and earlier this month Israel said they are having an issue conscripting enough people to fight in the military.
Tbf this is mostly just a change in paperwork procedure, it was already required for all males of 18 years to register for the draft. They couldn’t actually use it even if they wanted to, one way or another. Nobody would show up, or vanishingly few fools would.

Didn’t men age 18 have to manually enroll in selective service anyways? I know I had to.

To be fair refusing was basically a non option prior too.
Why didn’t anybody tell me I had a choice to refuse :( no matter, I outside the selection range (for now).
I think you can’t get a license or register to vote or something.
You could always refuse. It just carried enough penalties to ruin your life if you did.
Yup I wanted to but they said I would be denied for the student loans I needed to go to college, so I had to agree.
I couldn’t imagine what life would be like if I had refused and not gone to college.
