Tati Bruening performing as Contact Sports, Roseland Theater.

I think this one’s the best of the concert photography I had done recently. The smoke machine made for a bit of a challenge to shoot through, and this shot certainly isn’t good enough for my portfolio, but it’s good enough I could put it out here.

Thanks for seeing my work!

I’ll add something else, to me it’s about the subject itself.

Obviously she’s gorgeous, but the way she looks absolutely captured in that creative focus, consumed by her passion for what’ she’s crafting, oblivious to even the existence of a world around her, its so hauntingly beautiful… Like something private that I shouldn’t be seeing, or that is so rare that I’m blessed to see it.

The shadows, the smoke, the contour - all of it play into this mysterious, even slightly mistique experience in a place one wouldn’t expect it.

You were there, and certainly it was loud and dynamic and you were in a different state of mind.

For us, we’re just seeing this fixed image, and the lack of context let’s the mind fill in these details and make it more than what, to your eyes, it is.

At least that my take on it. Beautiful photo.

Very true, a good picture of someone fully in the process of crafting something has a particular beauty to it even when one isn’t attracted to the subject.

I’ve long felt there’s something holy in nightlife, and this picture kinda draws out that feeling. The smoke reminiscent of early morning fog borrows its etheriality. And her look of devoted focus almost brings to mind hagiographic portraiture where the subject is entirely focused away from the viewer. She also just kinda looks like a priest in the process of blessing eucharist.

Do you mean that feeling, sometimes, where everything feels… strange? Like it’s familiar but somehow alien, intangible - just a little bit eerie but incredibly fascinating, like it’s not a part of the same “real world” that one experiences during the day…

No idea if anime is your cup of tea, but I felt that “Call of the Night” did a great job of capturing that feeling of the night in some of its early episodes.

Partly, it’s also that within all this people act differently. The bar and club and the nocturnal dens of celebration and revelry alter the social order and in some ways violate it. And it permeates to places tangentially related such as the waffle house in the middle of the night. Then when there’s music pulsing, and people just being people in a way separated from the everyday. The sacred is set apart, and this world in so many ways feels set apart.
