The article really is disingenuous. All there is that is seriously doing this is a EU petition, one that will be dead on arrival because most of the affected games sell themselves as subscription services and because shit in the EU gets done when lobbyists usually aren’t homogeneous across country lines, and for this they are. A slap warning or two, that’s about all this will accomplish.

If people moved their game collections over to GOG from Steam, and were clear that this was the reason they were doing it, that would accomplish a lot more. It’s not going to happen, just look where governments are sliding towards, it isn’t towards consumer rights and society as a whole.

I hope this article isn’t because the industry might consider shifting to a complete subscription model, I really can’t afford the rising cost of new games on release or overpriced subscription models.

This really isn’t that bad, it’s an opportunity to be creative as well. They can replace the balls with anything, say, talismans that they have to stick on the creatures. When summoning them back, they could be reading off of these talismans. It would ironically have more of a Japanese vibe than Pokemon. Other alternatives: for summoning, just replace the balls with curled up miniature versions of the creatures that just expand into size and the capture device can be an artifact that shrinks them and turns them into stone statues you can place in your base. It could go full on occult into summoning circles. They could make it customizable into anything the player chooses as a jab at Nintendo at how worthless their patent is.

Sun’s problem was competing with Linux, which it couldn’t. Nobody wants to pay premium for discount proprietary Linux. Sun’s Java, however, still exists. Microsoft’s browser is far from the norm. There’s more alternatives to popular software than ever, whether it be office suites, video editing, 3d modeling, 2d painting, you call it. No, they don’t compete with the industry leaders that have both stability and far more features, but they won’t die off.

Embrace, extend, and exploit is just something that’s being thrown around to see whether it will stick as an argument, and quite frankly, I already see the 3E’s from already existing lemmy instances whose entire approach to the lemmyverse is essentially that - not that it makes it more ok, just that it’s clear that people have other priorities when they throw the concept aroud.

VM adds too much overhead for anything near modern, even if modern VM integration does add GPU drivers that act as a bridge for 3D acceleration. But SteamOS and Steamdeck are great examples of how far gaming has come in Linux, it’s no longer something just on the fringe.

I sort of do agree with your last comment. I tried to introduce several family members, and their take was basically that, why bother with something that seemed as unfamiliar as Linux for something they were already used to using. And if you try to use it at work, you are going to have to end up installing a Windows VM most of the time for most jobs. Monopolies be like that.

It’s not a specific one, it’s about not having to worry about which one are in the ProtonDB list and how it actually performs and can be configured. I just lose less out of having Linux in a VM for what I use it for, and have less surprises running the games on the system they are marketing and testing for.
