And not wanting to learn to do basic things on a computer made companies put everything on rails and then once everything was on rails, they could just take control away from you. I don’t know how many times working in an office people would be completely ignorant of how to use their computer and be completely fine with it. Like this is your career and your livelihood and the tool that you use daily to get the job done. Learn how to use it and not just the steps to “point and click at certain things” and when it doesn’t do exactly what you want you give up.

I mean, for a lot of people they’re fine especially if they’re priced appropriately. Especially with a lot more software as a service out there. My problem is that all of them have a built in drop dead date on when they’re going to stop getting updates and there’s not really a great option for the devices post ChromeOS.

ChromeOS certainly can be a good system. I still have my old CR-48 from when I got selected to test the OS and even when it was in its infancy, it was solid. I used it for a lot of my college career because it was better than my Asus eeePC which had Ubuntu on it.

Building off of this awesome and thorough response. There are some games that you might need a different version of Proton for everything to work right. I had issues with Blue Prince not being able to see any videos that played during the game. With Proton-GE, that is solved. So there might be a little adjustment and tweaks that need to be done but I’ve found everyone in the Linux community more than happy to help.

As to your comment about security vis-a-vis open source software. I think that comes from an inherent misunderstanding about what open source software is because I had a similar thought when I was younger. If a program is open source and you can see all the bones of the software, you can see the code and know how to hack it. That was my thinking at least. But the security comes from having everyone able to view the code and patch out vulnerabilities. Closed source just means that you might have the veil of security through obscurity where it takes a little time to have your bugs exploited.

My only complaint is that tab is not an option to auto complete. It’s infuriating as someone who works in Excel all day for work and then has some things to do at home in a spreadsheet and I type =vlook tab and then it switches to the next column. Let me autocomplete the formula to the next input! And they don’t let you change it either. It’s the most infuriating thing. It’s why I refused to use LibreOffice for a while but the switch to Linux forced my hand. I like Libre Office more than Only Office.

I mean, there’s already apps that are good that were created by reddit app developers. E.g. Boost for Lemmy. The problem isn’t the apps, it’s the availability of content and people. The /r/orioles on reddit has 85,163 subscribers. 110 people on the page right now. /c/Baltimore_Orioles here has 150 subscribers and no posts in 4 months which was a bot posted game thread with 0 comments on it. The problem is meaningful content and people to interact with, not the UI. There’s no reason to join if you want to talk sports because there’s no on to talk sports with. I’m not going to sit in game threads by myself and post my thoughts to no one.

The tough part for me is that the reason I use Reddit is for bullshitting with people about sports teams I like. Lets look at some of the communities here.

• Baltimore Orioles – There’s one on lemmy.world with 150 subscribers. The last post is from 4 months ago and it’s a game thread posted by a bot with 0 comments. There’s also one on fanaticus.social with the last post from 7 months ago.
• Carolina Panthers – There’s one on fanaticus.social with 3 subscribers.
• Miami Heat – There’s one on lemmy.world with 10 subscribers.
• Pittsburgh Penguins – Again, lemmy.world with 11 subscribers.

I’d love to get off reddit but until there’s actually people to talk with, this place is just never going to meet the needs of sports content that I use Reddit for. I had no interest in Bluesky until some people actually got on it as well. The Shutdown Fullcast for college football brought a bunch of people and fans there so it gave some utility to the site. Without utility, there’s no reason to be here.

there’s problems like Libre Office

A very simple problem that I absolutely hate in LibreOffice that I can’t find a solution for. When typing in a formula in a spreadsheet and then trying to autocomplete it, you cannot use ‘Tab’. If you want to do a vlookup and start typing “=vloo” and then hit ‘Tab’ it just changes to the next column. Working in Excel at work and then switching to Calc at home is jarring and terrible. That option can’t be changed as far as I know. It’s a complete dealbreaker for me between the two. Luckily I don’t need to do much in my personal life on spreadsheets anymore or need to use my home PC for work like I used to.

I genuinely don’t know how people are having their web browser use so much ram. How many tabs do you have open? Even at work where I run a commercial loan origination system and our core customer system in a web browser, at most I’ll have 15-20 tabs open. I don’t know how people are having dozens and dozens of tabs open that they’re using 64 gb of RAM.

Just one? I got a 2 pack for $40. They’ve been installed since March with zero issues. And single ply works just fine at home because I don’t feel like completely wrecking the plumbing in our house built in 1936. If you really have a problem with single ply, might I suggest you re-evaluate how well you’re washing your hands?

I buy single ply for home and use more of it but that’s the beauty of it. Buying something like Cottonelle is going to be miserable on the pipes at home. You can use more single ply but because it isn’t meant to be used like a paper towel, you can still flush it and trust it to break down appropriately. We have bidets installed on all the toilets too.

I’m surprised that makes you want to move back to Windows instead of moving to another hardware platform. I guess it’s cheaper to go back to Windows but I’d just rather support a company that supports what I do.

Just got a Keychron Q5 Pro and love it. It and the Zoom98 were the only two that had layouts that would really work out for me (wanted a 96%/98%) since I need a numpad and wanted a volume knob instead of just media keys.
