15·3 months agoThe energy math doesn’t make sense for grid scale applications with solid objects.
However if you can get water between two places it can work quite well. You need to live close to a big change in altitude and do a bit of geoengineering to create the upper and lower reservoirs, which can be destructive to local ecology, but not as much as a dam.

You can also use pumped air underwater with higher energy losses than pumped storage hydro because of compatibility of air.
Yeah our “Liberal” PM was asked by the conservative government 13 years ago to be the finance minister. The Overton window is completely fucked up, we have neofascism on one side and the opposite side is neoliberals who are okay with neofacism as long as it keeps the progressives away from taxing the rich and regulating multinationals. Any suggestion that the systemic problems destroying society should be addressed with structural solutions, or even that genocide and ethnic cleansing are bad, has now become tantamount to terrorism.

6·3 months agoI think that free speech laws are what stopped us from being proactive against these intolerant fascist views.
They turn tolerance from a social contract into a “paradox” where we have to tolerate the intolerant until they take over.
If we didn’t have such strict free speech laws, we could have deplatformed and jailed these people back when they were at the “protest with confederate and Nazi flags” stage and not had to deal with the neo-fascist government stage.
To put it another way punching Nazis should be legal. A Nazi is a direct existential threat to Jewish people and other minorities. Parading with Nazi paraphernalia in public is violence towards others and punching Nazis is valid self defense. American free speech and self defense laws were written to exclude “inducement” of violence, but that’s been whittled away by the supreme Court, including a ruling that walking around with Nazi flags in a Jewish neighborhood wasn’t bad enough to permit the residents to retaliate in any way because of “free speech”.

Neoliberals literally can’t understand basic social and material facts. You could tell them all day that arresting a thousand grannies will concretely demonstrate the newly passed law is bullshit creating the pressure to fix it. And they’ll respond “well if they named themselves something else they could have protested without being arrested” until their last breath.
Neoliberals literally CAN’T think of the common good because they think there shouldn’t be commons, only individuals, families, and private property. They also don’t think there can be good, only profitable and legal matter, in that order.
A person who thought that it’s more important to write “I support Palestine action” … on a paper than “I support Palestine”.
Ahhh, the worst kind of crime, adding the word “action” to an otherwise acceptable protest sign. His kids will be proud of him! He helped stop hundreds of the worst criminal scum today and really kept the streets of London safe!

There are many solutions to this problem. Evaporative cooling is just the cheapest. But it’s only cheap because we don’t charge these water users market rates for water. If they’re threatening drinking water or agricultural water we should just charge them for water usage the same as you pay for drinking water at home. That’s fundamentally what they’re taking when they drain the rivers dry. That way they compete directly on the water market instead of bypassing it.

They’re already saying our plan to tackle climate change is going to hurt the economy. But we know that doing nothing will hurt the economy worse. Being scared of them saying what they’re already saying is weak and cowardly. Toughen up and do the right thing.

Should we really stop caring for children if they’re not planned? Should we judge people for accidentally or intentionally having a baby in a situation we have never experienced? Maybe everyone should ask you before having sex so that you can bestow your wisdom on them. Then finally everyone can have your mature, complete understanding of human reproduction. It’s pure theft, if you only feed it a few comics it will recreate them as perfectly as a photocopier. The magic is that if you feed it enough art it’s copies become less authentic to the original (although sometimes still almost identical) so people feel like it’s an “artist making new art” instead of a broken copy machine. Then you slap a name like “AI Model” on the copyright infringement machine and you can sell a subscription for 30$/month so any moron can copyright infringe. Best part is they take the liability!
