Empathy is a trait that almost all individuals of many mammal species possess. Lethal intra-species violence is also a behaviour observed in many (all, i’d guess) of those same species.

Individuals, their peers, their social networks, their identities, institutions and the specific situation all influence behaviour. When those line up one way, we do a murder. A different configuration and we do a cuddle.

It makes no sense to suggest that humans are either inherently good or bad - those are artificial concepts that don’t even have a fixed meaning within a single human identity group. At the end of the day we’re just organisms exhibit behaviours to meet needs.

I’m just pointing out that poll doesn’t support your argument. Prioritizing hostages is just not the same as opposing genocide.

From june: 64% believe they are no innocents in gaza, which justifies killing even children.

That seems to me to be about hostages, rather than the genocide.

One in five still think killing palestinians is more important than saving the lives of hostages, but that doesn’t mean all of the other four in five oppose having killed all those palestinians.

People are upset about netanyahu prolonging the war and killing hostages for the sake of his career, but that’s not the same thing as opposing genocide.

Netanyahu would likely get voted out because of his mishandling and killing of hostages and his corruption but the genocide itself still enjoys widespread popularity in israeli. If there was an election, a slightly different right wing zealot would likely win.

The catholic church would absolutely use sainthood to whitewash the legacy of a rapist, but i’m sure that position has plenty of promising internal candidates.
