There is no fixed, unchanging core that stays identical from one moment to the next. What we call “you” is a continuously updating process, not a solid object that persists unchanged.

There is no single place behind your face where a self sits and watches. Experience (consciousness) arises from vast numbers of neurons interacting in particular patterns. The sense of being a unified “I” is just something the brain constructs. It feels solid from the inside, but it is a generated appearance rather than a central entity.

Well-adjusted adults don’t tend to scream in public either. You could try politely asking. Loudly playing TikToks in public is not illegal after all, so you don’t really have grounds to start making demands either.

You can always ask but you can’t demand it. Taking photos of even a single individual without their consent in a public place is perfectly legal in most of Europe. What is not okay is publishing that image though even that isn’t automatically illegal. If you’re not the focus of the shot but you appear in the background in the crowd then that is okay to publish even if you say no.

Agreed. That’s why I keep referencing the toupee fallacy: it’s easy to detect AI slop because it’s slop but anything well-made flies under the radar. This leads many people to assume that everything made using AI is by default not good and conversely when something is good they falsely assume a human made it. I’d argue that virtually every devout AI hater has at some point enjoyed AI content because they failed to detect it as such.

Yes, or an example I personally like to use that’s slightly less cartoonish than Bostrom’s Paperclip Maximizer is one that might ironically also come from him: getting into a self-driving taxi and telling it “to the airport, as fast as possible” and then you arrive 3 minutes later with the car completely wrecked, terrified out of your mind, covered in shit and vomit and with a 5-star wanted level. General intelligence doesn’t imply never making errors or hallucinating facts that simply aren’t true. Humans do that all the time. I know the topic isn’t particularly popular here but I feel like most people aren’t quite giving LLMs the credit they deserve. They’re far from perfect and riddled with glaringly obvious issues in both a technical and moral sense but they also do perform pretty damn good for what they are. Will it lead to general intelligence? Who knows, but based on what I’ve seen I’m sure not getting more confident that it absolutely won’t.

I don’t think we have the grounds to make this kind of absolute statement. How could anyone possibly know? I’m fine with people proclaiming even extremely high confidence for it being the case but to say it absolutely is so without leaving any chance for the possibility of being proven wrong just seems arrogant.

AI being conscious or actively wanting to harm us isn’t the scenario most people worrying about the alignment problem are concerned about. The worry is that it ends up destroying us as a side product of something else it does. In a similar way humans destroy an anthill where we want to put up a house. We don’t do it because we want to harm ants.

In the best case scenario where none of the bad things we worried about happens and everything turns out better than expected we’d eventually find ourselves in the precence of what is essentially and Oracle or “God”. Any question that can be answered it could answer and every problem that has a solution it could figure out. It would be better than all of humans at everything.

I guess the final problem for it to solve would be to figure out how to find meaning in a world where your contributions to it aren’t anymore needed and don’t matter.

“Hyper realistic” is a bit of a stretch. It doesn’t look real any more than it looks like Amy.

I don’t think that even humans have free will as in the ability to have acted otherwise and I don’t think AI would be any different. They too are bound by determinism exactly the same way. This isn’t even particularly controversial thing to say in a scientific context these days.

Every human action is a response to a prompt in a very similar way that it is for LLMs. We simply identify with that prompt because it arises in our own mind despite us clearly not authoring any of it. Nobody is able to pick their likes and dislikes and how bumping into these things in the world makes us behave. Anything anyone does follows from prior events and our genetic makeup. No action is taken in a vacuum.

If anything I see LLMs as a massive mirror being lifted in front of us. There’s very few things people criticize AI for that don’t just as well apply to humans. The ungrounded overconfidence in which they make claims about it is a great example.
