  • When I have a rough day or don’t sleep well the night before, I take a 30 minute ‘nap’ when I get home after work. It’s strictly 30 minutes.

It doesn’t matter if I fall asleep or not, it’s a strict 30 minute limit. I set a timer and I stand up when it rings. This lets me turn an otherwise completely wasted evening into something salvageable. Then, I can have a regularly active evening - I cook, play games, paint, whatever.

I don’t really have trouble falling asleep after that at the regular time, or maybe an hour late. I do struggle sometimes to ‘boot up’ after the nap, and it doesn’t always help (mostly when I don’t actually fall asleep) but it has worked for me more times than not.

Also, I drink a LOT of coffee - way too much. This is what works for me.

  • I don’t think it’s reverse culture shock, just culture shock. I have the same thing. I moved from eastern to northern Europe and going back for the holidays kind of sucks.

It’s loud, kind of stinks in places, and everything looks like shit. Nothing looks like it’s built with any kind of plan, and just feels very anti-human. There are potholes on the way from the airport that I know have been there for more than 10 years. There are sewer lids right where a car’s wheels roll. There are electricity poles right down the middle of 1m wide sidewalks. Cars are parked halfway up the sidewalk. The amount of ads in public and ground floor shops in every style and color is insane.

I don’t have any advice for dealing with it, it’s just a reality I accept now. I don’t belong here anymore. I start getting stressed out about 2 weeks in, so I just visit for the holidays now. I’d rather not be here.

    • Turn on your oven at 200c, ballpark
    • Trim any excess skin you don’t wanna eat off of a bunch of chicken thighs
    • Chuck the thighs in a baking sheet skin up
    • Wash some potatoes and cut em into wedges. You can peel em if you want
    • Chuck em in the baking sheet with the chicken
    • Sprinkle on some salt, and a bunch of other spices that work with chicken and/or potatoes. Garlic powder, pepper, paprika, fuckin dry basil or whatever, idk. Try to get it on both sides of the chicken but if you CBA just get it on the skin side
    • Drizzle some sunflower or olive oil all over everything. Just a bit is fine
    • Put the baking sheet in the oven. Doesn’t matter if the oven isn’t fully heated, it’s fine
    • Come back in like 1h and check if the chicken’s done. Come back every 10 min after that until it is
    • Once it’s cooked, you might turn on the fan to crisp up the skin and the potatoes a little more, or maybe not, whatever

It’s gonna be the most 7.5/10 dinner but it’s like 5 min prep, it reheats fine, and you can walk away and shower or take a nap. You can wash the baking sheet tomorrow, who cares? It was the first ‘recipe’ I learned how to cook in college, and it’s still my go-to lazy weekday recipe.

  • There was an AMA on reddit some time ago with a guy who had been convicted for embezzlement. His imprisonment consisted of effectively living in the prison but otherwise being allowed to leave during the day, go to work, etc. That’s probably the kind of imprisonment you can expect. I’m not saying that’s not bad. I’m just saying, it’s not as bad as you might think. I tried googling it but I can’t find it.

Personally, I disagree with the decision but do understand it. The government just doesn’t want more conflict between people, and it doesn’t care how it gets it. It makes sense ‘mechanically’, but I think it’s a significant blow to freedom of expression. It also adds to the list of reasons why people will vote more right wing in the future, which sucks.
