  • Given the choice between living in a authoritarian oligarchy without freedom vs a imperfect european liberal democracy, is not a tough choice for most.

Without knowing a lot about the older historical context here, I would imagine that the people of Russia and Ukraine have been fairly close throughout modern history. They are neighbouring countries with a language that is very similar, and was both a part of the USSR.

To me this attack on Ukraine seems like betraying family and/or friends. Ukraine did nothing besides existing peacefully. Russia decided to take land and citizens from Ukraine by annexing Crimea violently. They have continued killing and destroying Ukraine for years to seize land as their own. I have a tough time imagining Ukrainians in Crimea supporting the killing of their fellow countrymen by their violent neighbour for no good reason.

Since Crimea now is annexed by Russia we can’t trust any polls from there either.

I guess Russia should just give it back to Ukraine, and then they can do a legitimate vote. Russia obviously won’t do that, because they know how that will end.

What is the saying? If you love something, then set it free. If it was meant to be, it will come back to you. Russia should use that tactic with all regions of Ukraine that it is currently occupying. I am suuuure it will work out for Russia 😂

  • I am not so sure. Trump couldn’t even hold his moronic tariffs for more than a few days, before having to cave.

USA does not produce much besides services. China have a big surplus of production.

China also owns a huge amount of US debt. They can start dumping it which will increase the interest rate on the huge US debt. This would quickly put the US in a difficult position. Any solution besides just paying down the debt would weaken trust in the US, so they either have to take it or make everyone in the world lose faith in the current financial system with the US as it’s guardian.

  • Free as in freedom, not only free as in beer. That is how FOSS works. Also one of the things I find appealing about it.

By focusing on FOSS being this super serious thing, we kinda lose what is great about it. Everyone is welcome and free to use it as they see fit. That is by design (see licenses). A lot of FOSS is passion projects by people on their spare time, they do it because it is fun / fulfilling. We need all hands on deck, and FOSS should also be playful, experimental, and novel. FOSS is this super idealistic gift to humanity, from humanity. Every piece of FOSS software contributes to the collective human database of ideas and software.

The “us reasonable users” is a really unfortunate way of sharing your opinion on this matter. Is it unreasonable to be a femboy and use FOSS/Linux? By being elitist like this, I kinda get the same reaction you claim to get from this user. I don’t want to be clumped in with the users that feel they are superior to everyone else and acting like it, and gatekeeping the FOSS community and its representation.

  • I wouldn’t mind microtransactions, gacha games and gacha mechanics if there were sane upper limits to spend.

I was trying to learn how different gacha games work and monetization in f2p games in general, especially obes for smartphones.

I was surprised about how similar all the methods across games are. Some were a lot worse than others though.

I think the monetization method is sometimes viewed as acceptable by some, because the games often have a lot of content and can be a lot of fun to play. The thing I really dislike is that it’s unfairly monetized. Some people pay the majority of the income, they are also known as whales. There are of course some people that spend small sums, but the whales is where it is at.

After Arcade games went out of fashion we had a nice long period in which players paid about the same for a game, and got the same experience.

Now vulnerable people are paying more than they can afford to finance the game for everyone, and still everone gets a limited experience.

Some of the games I enjoyed the most had terrible gacha mechanics. One of them had items and mounts with 1/500 chance per pull. Of course it is designed so that it appears as 1/10, but it is really 1/500. To justify this they had the PITY system. Yes, thats the actual name of it. The pity system makes it so that after buying 500 pulls ypu are guaranteed the mount.

The price for 500 pulls? 500$

After the free pulls you could play to get, about 480$.

So I actually can’t get the entire game for even 500$…

That was just one of many such instances. I could probably spend more than 10 000$ and still not unlock absolutely everything.

Was it purely cosmetic? Nope. It gave an advantage too.

Legislation that effectively adds an upper limit to unlock the entire game with a sensible maximum monthly cost for new content, is needed in my opinion.

  • I think I kinda get what you mean. It’s so backwards that it is still necessary and that it is still a fight that has to be “won”. Personally I am not bothered or in any way opposed to gay rights, trans rights etc. so I personally do not need “convincing”. But I am not everyone. There are many parts of society that have little to no respect for LGBTQIA+.

In Norway a pretty liberal place, most of the population support gay rights, but there are especially a large portion amongst certain religious and minority groups that do not approve.

The fight is not over. It is not equally acceptable to be gay as hetero, or trans as cis. The fight is not over in most of the world.

Even in one of the most liberal countries in the world it is not actually equal.

The US has in a couple of months launched numerous attacks on the LGBTQIA+ community, and by protesting / marching we support those that need it. We show that they are not alone, and that those outside the community also protect them and wish them well.

I am personally a cishet man, but I also march with my wife. It takes maybe a couple of hours of my life every year, and it means a lot to the community to have all the support it can get.

I encourage you to participate as well. If not, consider staying neutral or verbally supportive. Your comment makes it seem like you disregard their continued struggle, but I think you are just trying to convey that it’s absurd that its still necessary, which I agree that it is 😊

  • This is not financial advice, I am a regular guy, not a professional or someone working with finance. Not licensed etc. If you lose everything by following anything I mention, it’s your responsibility.

I only buy passive and not actively managed funds. This is to keep the costs low. A passive fund costs anywhere from 0.1 to 0.3% each year. This is important, because that cost has to be paid every year of the total sum no matter the performance of the fund (in most cases). So low costs is important.

I usually buy a cheap index that tracks MSCI ACWI which is All Countries World Index.

By tracking it means that it buys and sells stocks to keep the holdings the same as that referance index.

MSCI ACWI is very popular as it tracks the entire world more or less. Including emerging markets.

As a Norwegian there is “Storebrand Alle Markeder” which I buy. For MSCI ACWI

But for Europe there is MSCI Europe Index, where I buy DNB Europe Indeks which tracks that.

So first check your current banks offerings, search for Europe and see what reference index they follow. Check other banks as well and see if they have lower costs for the same reference index.

I just want to mention an additional point just in case you are not aware. You should never time the market or try to be smart. There are exceptionally talented and intelligent people with the best tools in the world that you are trying to beat. You will lose sooner or later, but you might be lucky a few times. I recommend that you read about “The efficient market hypothesis”. I base all my investments on that principle.

Make sure you use tax efficient accounts if there is something like that in your country. So that you can sell and buy stocks without triggering taxes. So that the only time you have to pay taxes is when you take it out of the account.

Also, diversification is important. So make sure to diversify properly. That’s why I buy ACWI most of the time. Also make sure you have a long term view on your investments. You should be able to let the money stay in the market for an absolute minimum of 5 years

I am just a regular guy, and not an expert and not a trader or licensed or anything. I just put my savings in the stock market every month. So take everything with a large scoop of salt. This is not financial advice.

  • Its one of many contradictory ways I live my life. I am well aware of many of them, and change them gradually to align myself more with my beliefs. I find that I manage OK, but sometimes wish I was better.

I’ll probably become ovo lacto flexitarian in the future. That was what I managed to be for the longest. And it has 80% of the same effect or more. The rule was that I never bought meat or made food with meat. When I was served meat at family or friends, I would just eat it then. It reduced all the social friction, and made it so much easier. I lasted for a year or two.

Pure vegan is unrealistic short term for me. Maybe I’ll try in the future, or flexitarian vegan instead of ovo lacto flexitarian. Not sure.

  • I am unfortunately not. It was more meant as a way to say that for instance criminals (yes, even the worst ones) have value. That they deserve to live and have a decent life, no matter what.

That immigrants and asylum seekers should be treated with respect and given the help they need.

But also that animals have value. The way a lot of animals are treated is in no way acceptable.

I have tried being a vegetarian in the past, but have failed every time.

Sorry to disappoint. I wish I was better.

  • I believe all life have value, no matter what.

I believe in justice and equality.

I believe in the rule if law.

    I believe in democracy.

I believe in the freedom of speech.

    I believe in religious freedom.

I believe no one should go hungry.

I believe no one should freeze.

I believe no one should die from preventable diseases.

I believe everyone has a right to education.

I believe everyone has a right to healthcare.

I believe everyone has a right to participate in society and the internet.

I believe everyone should contribute if they can, because that is fair.

I believe people should be able to retire.

I believe most people are good, and want to do good.

I believe in cooperation, and working towards a common goal.

I believe that all people should have a minimum set of rights, that are non-negotiable.

I trust my neighbours, my family and strangers.

Based on these values I could be placed anywhere from center-right to far-left in Europe.

In the US I am a filthy commie

  • The issue with this is signal-to-noise ratio. If everything is equally valuable speech, then it becomes a bad platform for discussion.

The solution is for the individuals that want to share their right wing views to do so from an instance that are not consided problematic. I live in Norway, we are considered one of the most democratic countries in the world, and we do not allow hate speech.

A lot of the speech from right wing Americans would easily be considered unlawful here. With good reason.

There is nothing stopping someone with right wing views from registering and sharing their opinions on most Lemmy instances. Except if they want to act as bigots. They are free to talk about pretty much any traditional right wing topic. They can talk about immigration, how the money will trickle down anytime now, and most topics.

Right wing people are welcome at Lemmy. They are just not allowed to spread hate and be explicit bigots. The ones who leave or don’t join are not censored, they are just whiny and complain when people are sick of their shit.
