Expecting companies to build their own chip foundries and manufacture their own chips to avoid tariffs is as unrealistic as expecting poor people to singlehandedly use nuclear fission to create atoms from nothing to materialize into existence all the food they can’t afford. Even if these American “use AI for everything” megacorp regimes that can’t even write a mouse driver that’s under 1gb actually put their big swingin’ dicks back into their pants long enough to actually figure out how they could be efficient enough use the more achievable 90nm and 65nm chips, even that is so unachievable they’d never find a way to mass produce them affordably. Russia supposedly managed to diy their own 350nm chips which is barely even mid 90s Pentium 1 era bullshit and even that’s probably fake propaganda that, best case, followed some half successful low volume experiments in a lab.
The only purpose of this is to cause mass calamity and force people further into poverty while corporations have an excuse to make everything even more expensive without giving anything back to society in return.
I have never in my entire life paid for a streaming service. I didn’t stop pirating when Netflix was the only game in town and cost $8 / month. I didn’t pay for streaming even when every normie started getting internet access and “everyone was doing it”. Even during the high point of my life where I was not only gainfully employed but also able to accumulate savings I STILL never had a streaming service. You could count the self hosting spotify clone I made as a “streaming service” but I’m not paying extra money or probably supporting people with different ideological beliefs than me in order to use it so that really doesn’t count.
Installing arch without archinstall is way too much fucking work. I’d much rather spend time fixing the 10% greater likelihood of encountering issues post install than doing all that fucking bullshit manually. The command line is better for a lot of things but configuring partitions and mount points is not one of them. I demand a fuckin gui for that stuff.

holy fucking shit. I once programmed a mouse driver for an 8 bit computer with 32kb of ram. I don’t remember the exact size of the compiled driver but it was under 1kb.
Today’s tech companies probably couldn’t even figure out a way to make a hello world in python without it needing 100gb of storage, an Intel Core9/AMD Ryzen 7000 or better, an internet connection and an online user account.
The Windows file explorer is so goddamned inefficient it’s astounding. For example if you have a directory open and you need to open a second window with the parent directory and put it right next to the current one, it takes less than 2 seconds to set that up with Nemo and it could probably be faster if I actually used a tiling window manager.
The same situation, I timed it, takes TWELVE (12) seconds to accomplish in Windows 10, even with a dedicated gaming gpu and drivers which avoids all the stupid lag when managing open windows and clicking on stuff. How the FUCK do people effectively do ANYTHING on windows involving files? It’s mind boggling to think Windows is the preferred OS for game development, a process where you do this type of thing CONSTANTLY. Fuck.
Does Microsoft even do their own software development on Windows? Even a well-tuned Linux file manager is still reasonably difficult and mentally taxing when you have to do a lot of file management with ADHD but Windows is on an entire different plane of shittiness.

Maybe it fails because there isn’t a way to get DirectX SDK installed in protontricks but some mods work without this anyway. I’m going to go back to Windows Vista as GOD intended. Computer engineer here (well I have a computer engineering degree and have worked on several computer engineering projects at least). The only point of fucking with an i486 in 2025 for reasons besides “vintage computing” or playing MS-DOS games is that it’s probably the most powerful cpu that can still run on a cheap 4 layer circuit board. This cpu is also simple enough that a i486 chipset can be DIY’ed without ball grid array components. Electronic devices with 4 layer circuit boards are less susceptible to getting ruined by tariffs because they can be manufactured for a reasonable price in places besides just China. Ball grid array components require specialized equipment in order to put them on circuit boards. The easier surface mount (quad flat package) chips required to build a viable and performant i486 motherboard are simple enough that all you need is a cheap soldering iron and a steady hand to solder them onto a circuit board.
What I’m getting at is that prior to them dropping i486 support in Linux, it was possible to use cheapo microchips from Mouser, connect them to i486 cpu and singlehandedly DIY a modern-Linux capable computer, in theory at least.
With Linux dropping support for i486, the bar is now much higher. It’s still possible to completely DIY an ever more powerful, non-i486 based Linux-capable computer yourself if you REALLY know what you’re doing (and people HAVE done it).
I wanted to build one just for fun and maybe to use it like super high performance arduino but now there’s a lot less of a point so meh.

technically, the command line on modern computers runs in graphics mode and not text mode anyway. It ends up being more efficient to do this because of fonts and font sizes and multiple colors and whatnot. It’s been like this for at least the past 20 years. So the ctrl+alt+f1 screen is still a gui.
I would say yes. Personally it is kind of against everything I stand for to pay a corporation for ai. With that being said: the only reason I personally have not yet set up a completely ai-driven self-hosted lan forum or lemmy instance meant to simulate the Old Skool ™ days of the internet is because a) none of the forum software has an api that’s worth a damn (phpbb for example. gnusocial is also lame and stupid and impossible to work with) and b) lemmy instances are actually pretty difficult to both set up and get ai bots to operate with.
I could definitely hack up some diy python-bottles or django thingy in less effort than it would take to actually pull off any of those other approaches but I currently have marginally better things to do with my free time so it will have to wait.
If I ever finish the mountain of “more important” personal projects I have then I probably would eventually get a completely fake self-hosted self-made ai social media hackfuck.
I exclusively use Linux. In fact I don’t even own a computer that Windows would install on, at least not without hacks or workarounds.
I also play a lot of games. In my experience only the trashiest of the trash games don’t work on Linux. Developers have to go out of their way and do extra work to make a game not run on Linux these days. I will happily play an indie alternative of whatever trashy enshittification-sponsored game won’t run on Linux in the increasingly rare situation where I encounter one.
