I use concepts of games I like. Right now Alan Wake and Pacific Drive are the two of them.

• Main Laptop: Typewriter

• Main Pc, that has become more a render station since I mostly work on a laptop and game on a steam deck: Lighthouse

But when I started to be more interested in networking and installed openwrt on my router, I was more infatuated by Pacific Drive:

How is it more creepy than the tones you hear when dailing a phone number?

I think it is more about ambiguity. It is easier for a computer to intepret set tones and modulations than human speech.

Like telephone numbers being tied to specific tones. Instead of the system needing to keep track of the many languages and accents that a ‘6’ can be spoken by.

A lot is about the temporality of the word. I would like to add the psychology as well. It is to lessen the blow when confronted with the news your account got banned. Using the words ‘suspended indefinitely’ for it has a different impact:

Your account got banned.

Your account has been suspended indefinitely until further notice.

It is the same reason why we like to say someone has passed away, instead of died. Or we like to use lobbying for bribery.

You are correct. I just have a coworker that has ingrained the philosophy in me to always look for a way to put it in configuration, and not in a script that you have to maintain.

I don’t always agree with that. And I find your solution as valid as mine. It is always a matter of taste and trust. In this case in the script, or the fsdriver. That’s why I always quote the “easier” when comparing solutions to Linux problems.

I am no expert. But I think there is an ‘easier’ way too manage this with an overlay filesystem.

Have an immutable base with all permissions set. When a session is started have it be done in an in-memory overlay. On logout drop the overlay.

This might be easier if you don’t want to rely on cronjobs. But as I have no experience myself setting this up… ‘easier’ should be taken with a grain of salt. I just took inspiration from docker.

And maybe microplastics have the opposite effect. But this is just speculation, and afaik no sources support this.

It’s called ‘statiegeld’ here and we got them as long as I can remember. It’s is just recently it also covers the small plastic bottles and soda cans.

Because those people who gave up their robes saw that they were misguided and were open to new ideas. But some still have kept their hearts closed because some are just unwilling to have their convictions changed. KKK is still a thing, after all that talking. Raceism is still an issue, even when we tried giving them space.

Sometimes it is more than misguidence. Sometimes people just hate, and grudge. And when these people are given power they are able to spread their hate and misguide once more. And then we might have another Nazi Germany, where it will take a war to have it corrected. We didn’t get the Nazi’s to stop with just words. Are we able to have China stop doing it now, with just words? Are words helping in Palestina?

And in this day and age of the internet, even when we show those people the world that they can access. Show them how misguided their hatred is. They still choose to hate.

These words I wrote are in their hearts. Outside they tell sweet veiled words like ‘we must protect our children’ and ‘they are taking your jobs’. They will convince people against all facts, that the others chose this. That something genetic, is chosen. Never will they tell in those clear words what they truly want, because any sane moral person would see it for what it is.

At some point they manage to convince their followers that they are the truth, that anyone trying to guide them away to sanity is lying to them. And then the cycle completes and new unchangable hate-ist is born to spread the infection. See anti-vaxxers, see Q, see any conspiracy group that convinces their members everyone else is lying.

So, would you rather have a tyranny where people are allowed to just be. But where ideas of raceism and exclusion is censored.

Or a tyranny of the hateful that will one day knock on your door for telling the lies of inclusion?

I hate you. I despise you so deeply that I will use all my capital to move the democratic process. I am going to use the freedom you have given me to manipulate everyone into thinking you are the scum of the earth, unworthy of existence. I will demonize your actions on every turn. I will destroy you, your culture, and your very existentce. I just have to yell it long and hard enough and people will flock to my voice that I have been given on your platforms. And you will do nothing about it, even when you manage to expose my lies. It is you that is the cause of all our problems we face. If this is truly the top of recent week, the the sub has gone downhill in both moderation and content, which is sad to see.

Also thanks for proving my point. You somehow forced gardening into a political topic. A childhood prank into a political topic. We are truly master of politicing the most inane things.

The other topics I cannot say. Existing in a society is political. Breathing is political.

I just wish to see a place where a meme about gardening is met with conversation how things are for others. Ex: ‘This is how I do gardening in [location], I dream of having a nice field of [local species] to support the bees.’

And not have it devolve into political us-vs-them tribalism and hostilitites. Ex: ‘Those lawns are a product of American liberal colonialism! I hate you and you should feel ashamed!’

That these images are hosted on lemmygrad.ml is very telling and just supports the general feel that users interacting from there are just interacting to create hostility and dissonance.

Not everybody, sure, I had conversations that were pleasant. I even read Marx summarised work as a suggestion from one from the lemmygrad-instance. And someon corrected me on a misconception I had from it.

Edit: last but crossed out. Was stuck in primary response. I recognise that threads reviewed also has a lot of inate hostility for the ‘us’-camp. And hostility breeds hostility.

Sometimes humans do stuff that are not at all related with politics. But we are masters of linking any non-political action to political arguments. (The classic ‘I like pancakes.’-‘So you hate waffles!’-problem)

Sometimes I just want to have a space to engage with funny memes without the mental strain of filtering out political comments.
