Really good point. I’ve actually messed around a lot with GPT as a 5e DM and you’re right—as soon as it needs to generate unique content it just leads you in an infinite loop that goes no where.
I mean, I don’t think AGI necessarily implies singularity, and I doubt singularity will ever come from LLM’s. But when you look at human intelligence one could make the argument that it is a glorified input-output system like LLM’s.
I’m not sure. There’s a lot of things going on in the background with even human intelligence that we don’t understand.
Absolutely true. Thanks for the distinction.
I think maybe the argument could be made that AGI’s could expedite the creation of singularity, but you are correct in saying that the alignment problems matters less with rudimentary AGI.
Yeah, I have this completely unfounded gut feeling that they may have created something close to AGI internally that led to full brakes.
Their weird for-profit and non-for-profit board structure makes me think it was crafted that way in the event of a rapid acceleration—the pace and format of this firing makes me wonder if it was a last ditch effort to keep the genie from leaving the bottle.
That would honestly be preferable.
Probably all done in the name of alignment. We only really have one shot to make an AGI that doesn’t kill everyone (or do other weird unaligned stuff).
Exactly why I will never move back to the Upper Midwest.
I miss being cozy in my living room at night—watching the snow fall down in moonlight.
But that feeling isn’t worth power outages or thinking you can pull out of your driveway without clearing it, just for your car to get stuck and make you late for work.
I’ve been off of Reddit since they announced the API changes, and I had been a daily user since 2012. I don’t miss how toxic a lot of the site became, but I wish Lemmy were a bit more active. I tend to browse /all and the site just doesn’t turn over as much. It’s led to me picking up reading again, but at times I find myself sort of just refreshing my phone. Which is a bad waste of time. Not sure what to do about that.
Yes and no. I think it would be decently socially unacceptable for someone to decide to go completely dark for a day each week. A mandate would remove the stigma.
Thinking about it from a personal perspective I bet my closest friends/family would understand, but not other folks/work.
Modern society should institute a technological sabbath day—one day each week where the use of technology for non-essential purposes (things other than healthcare, utilities, etc) is banned. Up for comment as to what level of technology this includes.
I think it would do wonders for mental health.
Ah yes, makes sense then.
Are you trying to say Governor HVAC is left leaning? What are you talking about?!
Been using Zenni online exclusively for almost 15 years. Never had a bad experience
Could someone give me a TLDR on why Express is bad? Picked them up years ago and am now thinking about switching after this thread.
God damn, were they just that committed to wool?
I’m EM. What’s your specialty friend?
Yeah I was shocked. It’s just a different world now. Insta fitness models have just ruined it for everyone.
If you’re having a third life crisis (which is what it’s probably closer to than midlife at 29), and it’s at all related to the topics discussed in this thread (modern hustle culture, work environment/productivity) read the book “Four Thousand Weeks.” It was game changing for me in a similar crisis at 29/30.
Was nearly indestructible even with fairly heavy drinking—even into my late 20s. That has precipitously decreased since turning 30. This year finally got to the point where even a couple of drinks after work made it impossible to work out the next day. So pretty much stopped this summer and it made me realize how terrible drinking was actually making me feel on a daily basis.
Mother MJ is much kinder.
