  • Hahahaha.

We invaded it during the Spanish-American war to “liberate” Cuba (remove competing colonial power from our neighborhood) and set up a permanent Naval base there “for their protection.” We then pushed them into an infinite contract for two thousand dollars a year. That price has since gone up: as of 1974 we have been giving then FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS PER YEAR, a pittance that the post-revolutionary government of Cuba refuses out of principle.

It is stolen. Human Rights Violation Land isn’t the only purpose, it’s also to punish Cuba for ever daring to defy us.

    Fuck. This. Country.

  • Aeration is a known factor in cocktails, it also requires some kind of protein or structure in the liquid to hold onto air for more than a few moments. Slurping a bit as you sip will impact the taste more than shake/stir (assuming equal dilution, temperature, and clarity) The other factor bruise-truthers trot out is Volatile Organic Compounds and the “top notes” evaporating out or oxidizing and I’m sure that would happen if you left a neat glass out on the counter for half an hour, but ten seconds of tumbling is nothing compared to the distillation and bottling process.

It’s like the “espresso dies in thirty seconds” thing that’s actually an efficiency training benchmark that got misinterpreted at some point. The chemistry just isn’t that fast.

  • That’s one level of the divide, yes, but it’s reinforced by the rest of the structure. “Bioregionalism” suggests that cultures are more stable when they are contained within bioregions of climate and geography. People are more invested in what they perceive as their local environment and they are more likely to “feel heard” by others with that same stake. The current political borders, arbitrary as they are, push people to seek that connection in either protective isolation or a broader social identity.

It’s a relatively new idea (1970s) as far as political science goes but I find it compelling.

The other problem is that we let a right-wing propaganda apparatus operate unchallenged that began with the Nixon fallout and accelerated with Rupert Murdoch’s creation of Fox News in 1996 and that’s gonna take a few generations to unfuck no matter what else is going on.
