In the Netherlands and Belgium employers sometimes offer what is called a “baaldag”. Basically, if you’re having an especially shit day, you can take the day off. No doctors note required.

That’s why I said you could have someone drive you.
And mandatory sick notes are stupid.
Plenty of places you don’t need a sick note for a day off.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Looking for a secondary cheap phone for travel, any recommendations?
3·4 days agoThis is probably not what you want, but I sometimes use a 2017 Nokia 3310, the one with 3G.
There are not really apps on that(IRC only twitter and facebook, and I don’t know if those still work), but you can install/upgrade to the latest version of opera mini, which does offer access to (some) more apps.
To be clear this is on my to do list. In the past I just used it as a dumbphone.

31·5 days agoSorry grandpa. All your friends are dead.
I’ve never lived in the US.
Going to the doctor for the common cold is insane. Why waste doctors’ time on something that’ll pass on its own with a bit of rest and paracetamol? Utterly selfish.
Driving to a hospital if you’re not badly injured is also perfectly normal. Once again, why would you call an ambulance that could be helping someone in dire need, if you don’t need to?
Unless the injury is life threatening, drive yourself or have someone drive you. Not insane at all.

But I mean piracy filesharing. That was already popular on dial-in BBSes in the 80s.

131·6 days agoIt was also called piracy back then too. It was incredibly common on the Commodore 64 starting in the 80s . They’d often call themselves crackers, because you needed to crack the piracy protection to be able to copy disks.
Those disks and even cassettes would then be shared from person to person or sold in shops or on second hand markets. AFAIK this is also when 1337/leet became popularised, to avoid censorship on BBSes, where file sharing was also possible.
For example, a magazine from 1991:

Note the group is called Elite productions and they call themselves pirates. There’s also mention of crackers, specific events, and I especially enjoy that a piracy/cracking group felt it necessary to add a copyright logo next to the name of their piracy group which was called Elite Productions.

36·8 days agoTo be fair, it’s hard to prove causality.
Maybe he shot his own daughter because he loves Trump.
Maybe he loves Trump, because he’s the kind of man who would shoot his own daughter.
Maybe it’s a bit of both.

81·8 days agoYeah. I remember discussing this with non-Arab Muslims.
They talked about how annoying Arab cultural dominance can be, how they export Arab values and culture, while pretending it’s all Islam inspired rather than simply Arab traditions.
But I suppose that’s not a stunning insight. Don’t even need to leave the middle-east, to find Muslims who don’t agree with other Muslims on what it means to be a Muslim.

10·12 days agoThe problem is that when graphics become to realistic, you enter the uncanny valley, which makes things seem off.
IME it’s better when they (slightly) stylise the graphics, which makes the game look less realistic, but you weirdly end up noticing it less.
