  • The key difference between all previous civilizational collapses and the one we potentially face is that most people in the past were farmers. Even in the grandest empires like Rome, less than 10% of the population actually lived in cities. Most people lived in the countryside working the land. The city of Rome lost something like 95% of its population. But those people didn’t just crawl in a hole and die. They abandoned the city and joined the vast majority of the population that was living in the countryside. Many in the countryside actually saw their quality of life improve substantially. Many who had been slaves found the old legal system enforcing their slavery no longer existed. Rome collapsing just meant the end of the grand cities; political and economic systems could fragment, and people would just live more locally.

But today? Less than 5% of the population actually works on a farm. The vast majority of the population lives in cities. If the political and economic system collapses, the countryside can’t just absorb all those extra people. Hell, the farms can’t even operate without the equipment, fuels, and chemicals produced by the larger economic system.

Historically, when civilizations collapsed, the common folk just left the cities, abandoned the corrupt elites to their madness, and returned to small villages and rural life. But now there is simply nowhere for people to retreat to.

  • What you’re describing is Clarktech, technology sufficiently advanced to be indistinguishable from magic. We don’t know remotely how to create an AI artist that can actually create original works of art with their own perspective, critique, and soul. A system like any we know how to design has to create art from what is essentially the averaging of the work of many artists. Everything they make is a work by committee. Any individual perspective is washed out in the generating process.

We simply don’t have any idea how to create an AI that would exhibit the kind of individual perspective of a human artist. Until we at least have some plausible pathway for that, we might as well be arguing about what happens if it turns out magic is real.

  • This is why it’s now becoming standard design practice in the design of restrooms for large public buildings to simply build the women’s restroom larger than the men’s. This is really the classic “equality vs. equity.” Equality means building both restrooms the same size. Equity means realizing that to deliver the same level of service - the same average wait time, the women’s restrooms probably should just be built larger and with more total stalls. So you build out your restrooms with the number of stalls in the women’s room being about 40% or so greater than the total number of stalls and urinals in the men’s.

  • By Israel’s own numbers, Hamas killed two civilians for every military casualty on October 7. This number includes Israeli civilians killed by the IDF to prevent them from becoming hostages. Since the attack, the IDF has killed far far more than two Gazan civilians for every member of Hamas they’ve taken out. They’ve leveled Gaza and corralled its population into concentration camps.

The reason there has been no peace is that Israel doesn’t want peace. They are an expansionist state. They continuously expand their borders through the following method:

    1. Have Israeli citizens living right next to Arab populations (Palestinians and others.)

    2. Israel antagonizes their neighbors until some militant group responds violently.

    3. Send in the Israeli military to fight the militant group.

    4. Use fighting the group as cover to expel the Arab population from an area. Justify this by saying a “buffer zone” is required to separate Israelis and Arabs, like the Korean DMZ.

    5. Allow Israeli civilians to settle inside the “buffer zone.” Once again have Israelis living right next door to Arabs.

    6. Antagonize their neighbors until violence again erupts.

This is how Israel slowly expands its borders. And they’re not stopping at Gaza and the West Bank. They’re doing the same shit in Lebanon and Syria. Arab land today. Buffer zone tomorrow. Israeli cities and towns the day after. It’s a slow claiming of Israeli lebensraum one bit at a time, and they’ve been doing this for decades.

  • Fact: Gazans have just as much right to armed self defense as the Israelis do.

Fact: Hamas, by Israel’s own numbers, does a better job at avoiding civilian casualties than the IDF does.

Fact: people who hand wring about Hamas are just classists. They view killing someone with a bomb dropped from a plane as morally superior to killing someone with an AK 47. Their moral judgment in the validity of violence is primarily a function of the income of the person committing the violence.

  • Start a YouTube channel where you go around trying to get people to sign your petition to give you a Wikipedia page. If you got big enough, eventually you would get a Wikipedia page. Wikipedia wouldn’t even have to accept the petition; it might be a bad precedent to set that people can get a page just by submitting a petition. Instead, they could give you a page simply because you became mildly famous for trying to brute force yourself onto Wikipedia.

  • Exactly. Have people forgotten how Project 2025 explicitly wants to classify trans people and queer people more generally as inherently pornographic? Like, ultimately they fundamentally do not accept that trans folks just want to live as we are. They believe that people transition as some sort of public act of sex exhibitionism. They believe it is akin to child abuse for a child to be exposed to the concept of gay people existing. That is what they truly in their hearts believe. They believe that any LGBT content is inherently pornographic. If the theocrats can pressure Mastercard to shut down porn, they can do the same for any content produced about or by queer people of any sort. If they can pressure Steam, they can pressure YouTube or Nebula. As the smaller player, Nebula would be a lot more vulnerable to pressure. What would happen if Nebula had to choose between accepting credit card payments or hosting queer content creators?

  • Or imagine the worst case. Gabe is the world’s greatest prankster. He’s a true internet troll for the ages. He’s spent decades getting millions and millions of people dependent on his game hosting. He’s got hardware. He stands astride the game industry like a colossus. But the key is that Valve is still a private corporation. In theory, Gabe could do whatever he wants with it. Including, finally committing the last stage of his ultimate prank. One day…he just flips the off switch. Steam never enshittifies. It just shuts off forever without warning.

And thus, with one stroke, his master chess move concluded (to reasons comprehensible only to Gabe), he just shuts it off and walks away. His last words in public are, “it turns out, I was the greatest gamer of all the whole time…”
