You are falling for a common pitfall, assuming that intelligence is the dominant factor in success. There is enough evidence to suggest intelligence is a thing and that it does help general ability broadly, but it is basically always dominated by other factors, be it affluence or experience. It’s entirely possible for an expert in 1 field to end up being completely clueless and seeming like a dumbass when talking about anything else. There is even research to suggest people that are experts in one domain can be easier to fool into thinking they are more competent in all domains, actually making them less likely to seek external opinions and ending up worse off.

Most film critics do judge on entertainment value though. The difference is that film critics are watching like 200 movies a year (or more) so a lot more stuff is going to seem like tired retreads to them.

Although this provides the best experience (very broadly speaking) for new users. It only takes looking at websites from 20 years ago to realize that it ages very poorly and no one maintains the links/external media once they break.

But I hold such an opinion so to give my perspective: I don’t give 2 shits about punishment for punishments sake. If anything I only see that as causing more harm. What I care about is reducing net harm. There have been countless studies that have shown that severity of punishment is an extremely poor deterrent. Often times perpetrators are more concerned with the social impact getting caught will have on their immediate contacts over how long they’ll be jailed for, and frankly, just don’t think that they’ll get caught at all. If we take that for true, and my goal of reducing net harm, the value of jail becomes reforming those who can be reformed, and keeping those who can’t locked away from the rest of society. Neither of these things are intrinsically tied to any period of time. And because of how we treat ex-cons in society currently recidivism rates get worse for having been in prison. Possibly because they can’t get legal work, and possibly because the social reputation damage has already been done, so that fear is no longer holding them back.

I think I’ve watched maybe 2 The Completionist videos ever. I’m not in denial about anything here. I am waiting for the other side to respond, and possibly for the IRS to get involved before any final judgement. I just know his brothers statement sounded incredibly sketchy. Like I wouldn’t be surprised if he was embezzling money from the charity sketchy, while Jirard seemed genuine. Maybe Jirard is just a better actor/more charismatic, it is his job after all. Time will tell.

It seems like his brother was running things at the charity. Its plausible he just asked his brother where the money was going and trusted him.

Assuming you’re an atheist (because if not the answer is your god), the closest answer we have is the Golden Rule. Just don’t be too strict about assuming everyone is too similar to yourself when applying it.

Its pretty simple: Their businesses were built when it was cheap to borrow money. The pandemic caused large inflation. In response feds all around the world have greatly increased prime interest rates. Now their ‘run large deficits to expand’ business model is more expensive and they need to compete against increasingly valuable bonds as a competing source of investment. All of this means they need to aggressively chase improved profitability.

My bullshit detector is going off hard over this article, and I’m a vegetarian. With those disclaimers out of the way, if you think the suffering of a cat and cow are equal, and accept that some people are going to eat meat, you get a hell of a lot more meat out of a cow than a cat.
