This is disheartening.
The only thing that I want AI for in video production, is fixing dubbed live action TV and movies.
It would be great if the native actor’s voice was used for the language dub, and if their lips matched the new dub.
I know we all hate AI, and for a great reasons, but this is one of the few cool things that I think were been really beneficial - and I think could get buy-in from actors, with a limited AI release for this express purpose.
That wasn’t built around agentic AI integration.

I don’t necessarily disagree, but the fact they walked back the original policy because it was so unpopular leads me to believe they are trying to save face by implementing a PITA way of enabling unknown sources, such as through ADB.
The reason why I suspect that is because even with the original policy change, they were still going to allow unsigned apps to be installed via ADB.
But I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out.

But to answer your question, they would have provided an OS update to only allows app installations from verified developers, no matter the source.
To get verified developers have to submit identification to Google and go through a Google process.
So it wouldn’t matter if the install source was a third-party repo, or Google Play, the system would not have installed any applications not signed by a Google authorized certificate.
That becomes very problematic because it gives Google the ability to restrict applications outside of the Google Play Store ecosystem.
They were copying Apple’s playbook from the EU wherein Apple was legally mandated to allow third-party app stores, and in response Apple required all apps to be signed by an Apple verified developer certificate, no matter the repo.
And wouldn’t you know it, Apple either revoked or would not provide certificates to developers of apps Apple didn’t like, such as BitTorrent clients.

I don’t use it, so I’m unaware of any dramas, but mass banning sounds interesting.
That’s my point, I don’t use LLMs for those operations, and I’m aware of their faults, but that doesn’t mean they’re useless.
So yeah, I look forward to the AI bubble popping, but I’m still going to use LLMs for type of tasks they’re actually suited for.
I don’t think many people on Lemmy are under the the spell of AI hype, but plenty of people here are knowledgeable enough to know when, and when not, to leverage this useful, but dangerously overhyped and oversold, piece of technology.
Ask the model to confirm the answer and it will correct itself, at least when I’ve tried that.
I’m sure there’s a mathematical or programmatic logic as to why, but seeing as I don’t need LLM’s to count letters or invent new types of pseudoscience, I’m not overly interested in it.

For people who can spare $100-$200, I recommend buying an old ThinkPad or Dell business class laptop off eBay. Install Windows, update it, and stick it in your closet.
Because yes, sometimes you just need a Windows machine. VMs will cover most one off Windows requirements, but nothing beats a bare metal install.
Obviously this is not a solution for gaming, just the odd piece of Windows only software you need to run, or hardware you need to interface with that doesn’t have Linux drivers.
There’s still way too many niche communities on Reddit that just haven’t taken off on Lemmy e.g. alternative and non-team sports.
There’s a ViolentMonkey script that can automatically delete all of your Reddit comments. I just run that every few days.
It’s not ideal, but it’s the best that I can do if I value access to those communities, which I do.

This is 98% the right answer, but you drop them somewhere that keeps them intact, and believable enough so that people take them, and spend the rest of the weekend going to thrift stores trying to find an external floppy drive, and the next month trying to figure out how to get their iPhone to mount it.

Setting aside the issue of QA and how and in what conditions this methamphetamine is being produced, no, the pharmacological effects of methamphetamine are NOT just the same as Adderall (blend of 4 different amphetamine salts).
It’s also not prescribed for ADHD, except in rare circumstances. It’s mostly prescribed for conditions like narcolepsy, because it’s significantly more psychoactive then amphetamine salts, and that’s BEFORE you factor in issue of these being cartel produced counterfeit pressed meth pills vs production in an actual pharmaceutical laboratory with the accompanying conditions and controls.
