I don’t do much editing (certainly not fancy stuff with heavy use of all the tools), but there is a pretty good mod/patch PhotoGIMP that makes it present similar to Photoshop. It isn’t that old GIMP-shop one that might have malware. Doesn’t fix the missing stuff that power-users need, so no go for many of them. But the UI is much better than the main version of GIMP. Just have to apply the mod/patch after installing GIMP.

Good to know information, I haven’t looked into it beyond installing it to see how similar it was. Still could be a starting point for some folks that have the option to self-host and more specifically have large friend groups that have issues with only liking the UI of Discord. A very specific scenario for sure, but still nice to have options if one like that were to happen.

Not federated, but Revolt can be self-hosted and is very similar to Discord in the look and feel from what I have seen (I have it installed, but haven’t tried getting friends to install it and am not hosting). So it could be worth looking into for folks that are used to Discord.

Why would having a provider covered by the DMCA be a good thing (not offhand aware of NTD but I am guessing it is similar to the DMCA)? I have also been interested in trying Usenet, so thanks for sharing three examples of what to look for!

That one is what I thought of too. But I wonder what extra issues it would cause. If they are profiting off people uploading things that they don’t have the rights to (which I would imagine is still most of it), then it seems like it would be easier to go after reddit itself. Though I am only guessing and don’t know actual laws. The other issue is that porn is the thing that main stream sites that like to act like they are “clean” go after first. Which would mean a possible second mass exodus of users/traffic. Just like Verizon found out real fast when they tried to “clean up” Tumblr. Though I would guess reddit does have enough non-NSFW users and content to weather it much better.

Being fully transparent, I really only ever spend time on reddit when looking for such content since it is much safer from malware ads and fake links. Also better categorized for really specific interests with 4chan levels of daily users posting. Aside from that, I imagine that I will also be impacted by so many old threads that happen to have randomly crucial answers to very specific tech or misc (non-NSFW) problems I am dealing with. It is already very frustrating to get hit with their “You look sus and IP will be banned unless you sign in” warning screen if I happen to be not signed in and having all the ad/tracking blocking extensions and a VPN turned on.

One thing that bothers me about high level devs just leaving because they realized what they created. Is that them leaving means one more possible road block is just gone. They will just be replaced with people that are more fresh faced and on the hype train of going harder and harder. Lots of folks I know that are finishing college are just leaning more and more into just using all of these AI to solve problems instead of learning to code (or just write things) themselves. Some are still trying and I support them in my little ways, but I can see how much like a drug things start small and can turn into just using it all the time. Comp Sci majors were already getting worse in their actual understanding of how things work before LLMs (just look at all the things that will never be optimized and just rely on higher spec PCs).

The Italian national block list keeps causing lots of non-blocked sites from working at all. All because of Cloudflare being used by so many sites. It is basically an issue that is always in TorrentFreak’s news feed every other day or so. lol

I am not sure if they are also being hit with orders. But Mullvad has some DNS options on their site. Doesn’t require having their VPN either. I personally use either the Ad-block or Base ones. Even helps prevent in-app ads from loading in some games. Here is the relevant part of their site with the list of their options:

I want a new Blu-ray format but with the size of Laserdisc. Vinyl coming back into style shows that a large disc doesn’t matter if playing at home. Would be fun to have the Laserdisc vibe for movies and even whole seasons of TV using the tech of Blu-ray. Just think of how much uncompressed media could fit on something that size! It has no chance of happening of course, but Laserdiscs look sick. I loved when teachers would show educational stuff on them and see the size of those things. I plan to get a player sometime if I have the spare funds, but I did get Aliens on LD just to have and show off.

Being fair, just using a non-Chromium based browser these days kind of gives a major fingerprinting starting point.

Vivaldi is pretty awesome. The massive levels of customization are next level compared to other Chromium options. I use it first if needing to use a site that is hard-coded to reject Firefox or other non-Chromium browsers. Also use it as a feed reader a lot.

I have been daily driving Zen and aside from some random issues here and there when they mess with the UI (which is to be expected with a beta). It kind of reminds me of how cool Firefox felt back in the day coming from IE. Has been fun to see real progress and effort to try weird things that are local to the browser. Not trying to acquire costly extra services/products that take resources away from the browser. I just really wish Mozilla would have (or even start) allowing people to donate towards just the browser.

Some of the extra stuff they have have the option to directly support. The browser is still worth being a real option that isn’t just some Chromium-based BS. Yet they keep trying to divert money to everything but it. I hope that the major forks of FF start tying to prepare for going forward in the main code without Mozilla when/if the time comes. This new IE that is Chrome/Chromium can’t be allowed to keep going and dictating what is and isn’t allowed.

I also have LibreWolf and Mullvad (along with tor) and like them for the efforts in privacy and security. But are too restrictive for daily use for me. Mostly use them only with VPN when finding torrents and other stuff that I don’t want to be tied to an account/syncing (not just NSFW but searching and looking into political or questionable topics). Very happy to have options no matter what.

The next guy will likely have better/different ideas on how to do things. The extra fucked up part comes when the “new guys” purge all the people and systems that were already working and proven end up just circling around to more or less the old things. While of course acting like it was all their “ideas” after spending more money than was ever needed. The workers get fucked and the undervalued knowledge is lost (and the new workers also get fucked by being underpaid and overworked themselves). So fucking done with how much the wasteful executives giving themselves bonuses and keep cutting more and more corners.

Was kind of mind blowing moment when I was old enough to pay attention to the main underlying plot line of Who Framed Rodger Rabbit being about killing off public transport for cars. Like it is very clearly stated throughout the movie, but as a child it just went over my head. Not like I didn’t pay attention to when it was being talked about, just not able to appreciate the meaning. I also am from a more rural area, so things like public transportation were not something I interacted with outside of seeing it on TV shows and movies.

Same, was sad to see it wasn’t getting updated. Even wanted to donate to it, but the links all just went in a circle. Was hoping that someone might fork it into something active again.
