I don’t think it’s wasteful to have both KDE and Gnome. It’s healthy competition and as you say, innovation.
However the job of a distribution is to gather upstream software into a meaningful OS, and rewriting everything that should be an upstream software shared with other distributions is a distraction.
So Unity was unnecessary “not invented here” syndrome. Just like Snap is.
They tried Unity and gave up for Gnome 3 - however they ship a heavily customized Gbome 3.
Now they’re trying Snap. How long before they give up and use flatpak like every other distro?

I don’t hate Ubuntu, and it was my distribution from nearly 20 years. Meaning since it was first released until recently. I loved it for a long time because it was based on dpkg which was much better than rpm at the time AND it was way more user friendly than the others. Even as a software developer I like my distribution to move out of the way to let me focus on using it, not babysitting it.
But I moved away because of Snaps. Currently on Fedora and it’s pretty good. I know it’s possible to get rid of Snaps or use a derivative but I prefer to stay close to stock for whatever distribution I use.
If Ubuntu works for you and you don’t mind snaps, then just use that!

Distro are not that different in practice, just pick one and go on with your life.
Mac are only competitive on the smallest configuration, as you start to add the same options to each the Mac pricing goes through the roof while this one’s price will only increase by a bit.
I’m not saying Firefox is less good or anything.
Just that I’m not surprised Microsoft doesn’t bother targeting Firefox with this popup. Microsoft’s goal is to get more market share and going after Firefox users is not going to get much of it. Even if they somehow convince every single Firefox users to use Edge they would still be far behind Chrome.
Chrome is where the market share is.
Also the 2 people per month downloading Firefox probably do it for privacy reasons, harder to convince them than a user using a Big Tech browser to use a different Big Tech browser.
It means you can run apps without trusting their developer will full access to your computer and your files.
Just like on mobile, you only allow apps to access what you know they need. Nothing more.
My experience with “real” people is that they don’t even see the difference. Only so-called “Windows power users” are annoyed.
I got my mother a Chromebook and she used it for years, even tried to explain her it was not the same as her previous Windows PC she never understood it was not the same.

In my experience as soon as they get a web browser, people don’t care. Most people are lost when they have to deal with the file manager on Windows anyway…
When you’re ready to go back to the job market, I recommend you to join a company that develops a product. Not a service company that will sell you like fresh meat to its clients, like the one you listed.
Because it’s a good editor, it’s open source and have Linux binaries.
I hated Microsoft in the 90’s and 00’s but today’s MS is not that bad. VSCode in particular is a good example of MS now being a good citizen of Open Source.
And as other said, if you don’t like the telemetry in VSCode there are forks without it.
I just don’t like Linus because he’s annoying and abuses clickbait thumbnails and titles.
Some of their videos (from other people than himself) are good, but usually I’ll avoid LTT content all together.
