  • I never understood the benefits compared to just alt-tab

I use it daily and I would be so pissed if it went away.

I work in IT and often times when I’m working on something (with multiple windows / apps open) somebody knocks at my door or calls my phone or messages me on outlook / teams and needs me to do a thing or help with a problem, which more often than not also means I’ll be opening another X windows / apps.

Many times I just couldn’t find the specific window / app anymore, which I was searching for at this moment, because there were so many things open on my desktop.

    Now I have a simple rule: 1 workspace = 1 task

I work on something and have X windows / apps open on a workspace, someone tells me to look at problem X, I instantly switch to a different, empty workspace and use that. It’s like “grouping” windows / apps together. It’s especially helpful because a lot of my tasks run in a browser or terminal and I don’t want to alt-tab through X browser- or terminal-windows just to find the correct one.

Sometimes I look at my colleagues desktop with 30+ windows open on 1 workspace, struggling to find the window he’s looking for and I am sooooo glad I’m not like this anymore. He’s using mac and opening the overview / expose (or whatever you call it) and every window is so tiny, I’m having a hard time making out which is which.

They have had their fair share of (sometimes easily avoidable) fuck-ups.

    Stuff like:

    • letting their websites SSL certificate expire (multiple times)
    • telling users to set the date in their OS back to when the cert was still valid as a workaround
    • accidentally DDoS’ing the AUR (I think multiple times too?)
    • IIRC also some internal struggle about how to use the money donated to them

Especially the SSL cert hurts. They cannot auto-renew their websites SSL cert (and didn’t seem to learn from their first mistake) and they want to maintain a linux distro?

  • For simple cutting & slicing I honestly just write ffmpeg oneliners.

+1 fo ffmpeg and not having to install another tool for a single task.

I do not edit videos, I just record with obs-studio and cut out unneeded parts. ffmpeg does that, it does so fast and without any problems + it also works for converting videos to another codec.

  • I have been using Arch Linux on my Desktop PC at home since somewhere in the last quarter of 2020. I didn’t have to rescue-boot or anything like that in all those years. I did reinstall Arch once because I got a new PC.

I do have an all AMD setup, as I heard NVIDIA isn’t all too nice to linux in general and the drivers were a hassle to get right, never tried it though.

Maybe it depends on what you’re doing on your PC. I’m mostly gaming, surfing the web, youtube and a little docker on the side.

  • I’d really love to get all my people to use FOSS software or, at the very least, stop using WhatsApp and Co and switch to Signal.

The thing is, most people (including my people) just don’t care. At all.

The response is always one of these:

    • I don’t care, let them read all I send / see all I do
    • You’re just paranoid because you’re working in IT
    • You can just ignore the ads
    • You just gotta deal with it

It got to a point where it became so frustrating and the “paranoid” bit just pissing me off so much, I gave up. I don’t even talk about IT anymore with them, they wouldn’t (want to) understand anyway.

I feel like I’m on the only inhabitant of an island in the middle of the ocean.

I honestly think the only way to get people to care is, if the consequences themselves kick these people between the legs. Which will probably not happen in a way where they would understand “this wouldn’t have happened with FOSS software”.

  • I didn’t mean to get caught up in exceptions or exaggerations. I’m no developer either, so I have zero background-knowledge about game-development or game-engines.

Though as I work in IT (again, no developer) and live within a zero-IT-knowledge friend circle, I tend to try and shine a little light on some things that, to the outside, might seem simple but maybe aren’t. I guess sometimes I’m trying to err on the side of caution a little too much.

I definitely think there are a few of those one-line, true/false settings that could just be toggled, especially things that are handled by the engine instead of the game-logic itself, though I cannot speak of experience here.
