You could look at https://tinylist.app/, which allows for self hosting… But it is pretty basic atm.
I don’t mind paying for the extensions as it supports the opensource project (they provide the basics for free)…
I can vouch that the extensions work on the self hosted setup. (Got the Holiday special)
It’s one of the only reasons I keep an account on things like Twitter - basically to advocate for the fediverse, and apps like Lemmy, Peertube, Pleroma etc…
The inertia of using the ‘mainstream’ platforms will be one of the hardest things to overcome… If all your friends and family are on platform X, and they’re not coming to platform Y with you… well, it could be a rather boring experience… at least at first…
Installed! Using protonmail already, but with Delta, I can use the space of my Gmail account, and annoy Google with encrypted message content… 😆
Using lemmy directly will give you more control over the post and lemmy specific features…
