  • Dang that’s awesome. If I were in NY I feel like I would exceed that 12 ride limit & get free rides within the first day or two hahaha.

I used to live in Japan (in the rural north) and for a time I was also in Tokyo. Their public transportation infrastructure, while intimidating and maze-like (bullet/local trains, buses, the metro) I quickly fell in love how convenient and smoothly things ran. With a suica pass I would actually get on trains with no real destination just to enjoy the ride hahaha (and the a/c).

I want to upvote harder. When the arts have died, humanity’s soul will follow soon after! Being forced to choose between having food to eat or a place to stay and pursuing creative interests is soul-crushing.

UBI & eating the rich can’t come soon enough.

  • There was an obviously fraudulent charge on my PayPal account and I submitted a request for a refund that got rejected by their automated system. I had to email back and forth PayPal support directly as well as the business involved, showing evidence of multiple address info change requests in quick succession and other strange things about the purchase. When things stalled I threatened to bring the issue to the FTC consumer protection bureau and finally that put the fire under their asses. Eventually I got my money back but it took considerable effort to get them to do the right thing.

Needless to say after all that I deleted my PayPal account.

  • I lived and worked in China for a year (Shenzhen). There was a palpable sense of brainwashing and/or an overpowering air of unhealthy patriotism there. Which made it stranger for me as I had Chinese friends and coworkers that seemed like decent normal people, we went to bars and drank and joked together. But whenever the topic of China as a country and its policies came up, everyone had a similar change in attitude and unwavering loyalty to the government.

I never felt that I was being targeted specifically, but I also never felt truly comfortable for a number of reasons. I’m glad I got to expand my horizons and experience a bit of what the country/city had to offer, I don’t think I would willingly go to live there again.
