They might have booked the trip before it was clear it was going to be so bad, and I doubt you can get your money back on a ticket for something like that. They probably rolled the dice and hoped for the best. It’s always been a roulette of whether you’d get a ‘good’ border patrol agent or some guy with a chip on his shoulder. It’s just that the latter feels more empowered now and there’s nobody keeping them in check.
I doubt it’s common. I’ve traveled to Australia and the US (and a bunch of other places) with just a few nights in a hostel booked, sometimes even without a return flight. Might be different if you’ve got a middle eastern name or something like that, but pretty much every backpacker travels this way.

Yeah, I’ve always travelled like this. You just get a ho(s)tel for the first few nights, and then you just stay longer if you like where you are or you move on to the next place based on what locals/other travellers recommend.

Point is, they’re big, impossible to hide from anyone that has satellites, and you just need to get a lucky hit with a relatively cheap missile/torpedo to give the other side a multi-billion dollar loss in one go.

If your adversary has satellites that can tell them where you are and a sufficient amount of missiles / torpedoes, there’s only so much you can do.
All UBI proposals I’ve seen don’t get anywhere near what you’d need to live off, and even worse, it’s sometimes sold as a way to gut other social programs. We definitely need to do something if we really are going into a world where AI is taking jobs, but it needs to be something better (maybe just provide free housing, and other basic necessities if AI can provide us with unlimited stuff anyway?).
But the way things are going, the billionaires just want to make their own personal wealth grow and don’t think what would happen to the rest of us in the future they’re imagining.

The US is just going to isolate itself by doing a trade war by itself. The only way this was going to really hurt China was if the US somehow got the EU, Canada and Australia to put the same tariffs on China. Instead the US is just pushing everyone into China’s arms and making things more expensive on their end.

It’s a crime and terrible, but it’s not terrorism (ie. Violence for political ends). Terrorism laws allow the government to do all kinds of stuff like searches without warrants and extended pre-trial detention. It’s good that they’re taking these crimes seriously, but the terrorism units should stay far away from this (and should be abolished entirely, ideally).
And go after the influencers for incitement of crimes. If what Andrew Tate and others are publishing is causing people to do this, they should be locked up.
And the government is just using this as an excuse to slowly expand what falls under the terrorism legislation, until everything’s terrorism and the rule of law is completely undermined.
That would just give them an excuse to go deeper into Syria. They’re not above getting a bunch of their own civilians killed to be able to retaliate.
