  • Yesss… satisfied than what I expected :D

So I still need Beaglebone Black, connect it with x86 based laptop, and run the script on x86 laptop right? As the standard requirement for L-booting I read in official guide…

Gladly, I don’t have and don’t wanna buy RasPi because the price is insane in my country (Indonesian), but other peripherals like BB are still on normal price. Have you any recommended using other alternatives than Beaglebone Black? :)

I’m sorry to ask many noob questions to you, because I just found the one who make this possibly happen as I’m starting losing hope for tinkering this, and don’t wanna risk to brick that too cause my poor knowledge and preparing things. Still… bless you sir…

  • I never thought to get this detail answer from lemmy user. You are real dark magician! Thank you so much… I just surprised when check my inbox and got this + easy to understand for inexperience like me in Libreboot process. The only info I have right now for L-booting x200s is this. But your tips here are clearly make L-booting x200s looks so easy and make it possible as fast as I can.

do not compile libreboot with raspberry pi nor any sbc you’re using (use real x86 computer)

Can you give me an example for what real x86 computer you used or other best option? I’m still confused for the keyword in search engine. Still… thank you so much for this guidance from my soul. It looks like overreacted, but this little step stone is very important for me to start…

  • This is great and most relevant answer from all comment on this topic imo! Viruses are evolve everyday, hacker always find a way to intercept computer that has same framework system.

QubesOS breaks that framework pattern and make their system more dynamic with VM-ing everything, so the impact of viruses are near-to-zero.

++ QubesOS also provide all security enhanced out of the box SO we can enhanced it more with other security tools rather than start from RAW system with majority Linux OS…

  • If you read this two news:

    1. Hackers are using leaked NSA hacking tools
    2. GobRAT malware written in Go language targeting Linux routers

As a REAL case and “proof of theory” example to understand what you said:

ME therefore disabled, but having security flaws with ancient cpus and no microcode updates

The end point for me is flashing core/libre boot are more enhance security + privacy because you use BIOS design with less used by majority, so less get impacted by mess vulnerable system from hacker. The impact are mid to low (from the case above), unless you are highly targeted by. For the flaws with microcode updates, is not really easy to break as we think AND if it’s already there by IT team backed from government or hacker gang, still its only happen if we highly targeted only. You can check this video (34C3 - Intel ME: Myths and reality) for deep explanation about Intel ME cleaner on Coreboot.

If yoiu watch Ithaka documentary movie (2021) about Julian Assange father, you can see one moment where Assange’s Wife still using Thinkpad x220 as her daily driver for communication. I think such as Julian Assange, where know more about privacy and security system than us because many top experts around him also, have high change that the laptop possibly installed with Libreboot / Coreboot / Wikileaks own BIOS design imo.

If new high end device like you said, are more secure and private than custom BIOS from old thinkpad, why Julian Assange still using old Thinkpad x220? Of course he can’t because highly targeted by government in the world. But why he choose laptop that so old to use and pron to vulnerable? There’s a reason for him to choose old thinkpad rather than new one I think. Only from this information, I validate that using core/libre boot can enhance security and privacy our digital system based by reality case, deep explanation standpoint, and used by highest end user in privacy and humanity advocator (Julian Assange).

Drives made with SLC flash memory are practically nonexistent. Affordable ones completely so. Times have changed.

Yes, there are many SSD SLC with afforable price right now too, for example ADATA SU650 I used. The benefit SLC over other types in the video I provide before are after we secure erase our SSD. SLC provide less latency than others, and trim from SSD controller are not enough to clean the data or reduce the latency after using it for long time (based by research in the paper). And from point of security as the main topic in paper, show a good point that SLC give more clean data format than others for privacy minded people (focused on that right now). I’m still searching the latest paper about this topic… still stuck in this because others not explain well or have proof with research / comparison as this.

  • Any SSD manufactures will fine as long you remember to choose SSD with SLC type for fastest, more durable, less error-prone, and security integration (on this link for further information). With the longest guarantee from the manufactures too will be great for you in long term usage.

For secure thing, SLC is the best option you have as you can see this video from this source that I found week ago. SSD with SLC type will maximize your productivity than other types, while also keep your privacy when you want sell them in the future.

I know the sources I’ll give to you are from 2011/13 research like this comment. But as far as I know, this sources are the best explanation that give me deep understanding on how SSD works, rather than just articles or simple explanation things from manufactures with no deep explanation how they methods works. It’s up to you to in the end…
