I enjoy my Garmin for health and sports data, but I wouldn’t buy a regular smart watch, I don’t use its notifications or payments (or whatever else ppl use them for).

I hope this is satire 👀
interestingly it’s the same Violife brand that we have in the UK :)
thanks, TIL :)
I was enjoying reading this until he “found God” 😐 happy for his new healthy lifestyle though
Was that some sort of kombucha-flavoured soft drink? Actual kombucha drink tastes only like vinegar. (I drank it for maybe a year in a health-crazed period ~20 years ago xD)
Out of curiosity, where do you live? I’m in Scotland with occasional visits to Hungary, and both have a bunch of kinds of vegan cheese now. In the UK it’s more mainstream, but in Hungarian “organic shops” I found some interesting ones, like strawberry-flavoured cream cheese, that we don’t have in Scotland.
Back when I became vegan in 2012, the Scottish vegan cheese situation was dreary, but by the pandemic it got pretty good.

I get this on FB’s Messenger, it notifies me that there’s a new message in the thread. Yes, it’s my message, the one I just sent, thanks Meta, I’m aware of it.

Thanks, I haven’t considered FLOSS software this way before.

if it helps, as a lifetime Windows user I installed Linux Mint on an old laptop a few weeks ago, and used it for a week while travelling, and it went well :D It’s just different enough from Windows to have a bit of a learning curve, but nothing too scary.
I know of a few self hosted projects that has been used to some extent with AI and has gotten reaaaalllyyy bad security patches.
Yeah, I noticed similar too. I’ve been using a game mod for many years that is in active development, and its devs switched to very AI-heavy development earlier this year. They now add new features with lightning speed, but they are noticeably buggier and unreliable.
No, it relies on user tagging when creating a post, so sadly only works for posts made by PieFed users for now:

I think using an algorithm would be treacherous territory bc there would be guaranteed false positives.
Like, if you’re sitting in front of a computer as part of your job, you’re using LLMs. And if you aren’t, you’re probably using them indirectly and don’t even know it.
This is a gross generalisation. If you don’t use Google (or use a search operator to go straight to its Web results), and disable Copilot in Windows/Office, that takes care of the most annoying instances of corporations pushing LLMs on you. In my experience, in more specialised software AI features tend to be opt-in rather than opt-out.
PieFed has an option for blocking AI-generated posts

yeah, I’ve since seen the suggestion for enforced tagging in the top comment, and I agree that it could be a good solution for allowing users to decide for themselves if they want to engage
Yes please. It’s dispiriting to regularly go through the cycle of seeing an interesting project pop up here, oh wait it’s vibe-coded crap, nevermind…

Not sure if they changed the original title or it was editorialised by OP, but the current article title is much better at highlighting the problem:
Revealed: how Russia uses mobile ‘super-app’ Max to spy on its citizens
Research shows tens of millions of people are being forced to use platform that amounts to ‘backdoor’ on their device

fuck I haven’t heard of this, I wish he stayed off. I only think of him when I have to tick that childish pineapple checkbox on wordpress.org. I would be much more reassured if Wordpress was in a mature adult’s hands.

And yeah, when you give a company license to do whatever they want with your data, “whatever they want” includes AI.
I think an important point is that with the decline of Pinterest’s popularity, most of their data was probably acquired many years before genAI became mainstream. (Like I think I only used it around 2008-2010.) So most users probably never imagined their data could be used for training like this in the future.
I’m the kind of person who makes spreadsheets about everything, so I have a spreadsheet to see how my running performance changes over time and another one tracking my sleep, stress levels, habits, etc.
Most of this I could see on Garmin’s web UI, but I don’t assume the company will be around forever, so I’d rather save the data for myself. Now I don’t use the data for anything specific, but it’s nice to see it confirm the effect my good/bad habits have on my health 😅 Also it gives an extra motivation to get off my ass.
