  • You’re not wrong, and I agree in that it feels like W10 is where MS finally got it right.

However, hindsight is 20/20, and those sentiments were definitely not felt in the first few years after W10 was released. Once all the big issues were worked out and people figured out how to remove the bloat/spyware shit though, it was a solid OS. I still run it on my gaming PC (for now - tested some crucial programs last night on my laptop running LMDE6, great success)

What did W11 add that we didn’t have before? A TPM requirement? Ads? AI slop/shovelware/spyware?

W11 right now is essentially a shitty skin on top of W10, with all that extra shit. The kernel is still version 10.x.whatever FFS 😅. But SHINY INTERFACE and ONEDRIVE

  • Well, the coordinator is probably not the problem, and the soil sensors are probably fine, too; from what I have heard Thirdreality devices are generally quite good.

That’s what I heard, too, and my wife is very happy with being able to know exactly when to water the plants, which is nice.

I trust you are using a USB extension cable for the coordinator and don’t have it plugged in directly in the USB port?

Of course. It’s zip-tied to a plastic support on the shelving that holds everything. Well away from wifi, too.

No idea how good the smart plugs are, but if one of the soil sensors is basically next to the coordinator and still falls off the network randomly then the problem is likely not the plugs or the network mesh.

Ah that was worded weird - it’s one of the smart plugs that’s next to the coordinator. The soil sensors are all on other floors.

All things being equal I would suggest switching to zigbee2mqtt and see if that helps. Even if it doesn’t, and the culprit is something else, zigbee2mqtt is (in my experience) better in the long run, because it generally supports more devices than ZHA and is much quicker in getting new devices supported.

That was my thought as well.

  • I’m slowly converting everything to run on these little 1 liter PCs. I have three so far (four if you count the Mac Mini NAS), and an Optiplex 7050 SFF that’s been a bit hotrodded with a 300W XE3 PSU, Precision 3420 CPU cooler, & Noctua fans w/extra intake fan.

I like the Optiplex for obvious reasons, but it’s a bit of a power hog with the i7-7700 and 48GB RAM. I haven’t measured them individually, but if I had to guess, the Optiplex probably accounts for a solid 1/3 of the power usage in my entire homelab.

  • We’ve got a few Echos, but these days they are mainly used as a bluetooth speaker (bedroom), kitchen timer (kitchen), and the kids’ one (basement) is used for music… and that’s about it.

I have one in the garage, too, but I’m about to throw it against the concrete floor and run it over a few times for how often it only plays one fucking song from my Spotify playlist when I’m working on my motorcycles.
