Friendica definitely is one of the underrated fediverse platforms.
Many bounce off of it because it seems a bit slow and its UI is dated. But in terms of the general ideas about what the fediverse can be and the functionality it’s implemented, it’s very interesting and it would be awesome for it to seem more love.

Copy the link to the lemmy post/comment, and search for it in the mastodon interface. It should get fetched and come up. Then you can just reply (and like) as you normally would.
Beyond that you can follow lemmy communities and users normally. Following communities might flood your timeline as comments as well as posts will go in there.

Just skimming through … somehow caught a link to an estimate of mine on lemmy’s true size (god I hope that number is reasonable … it was a very rough estimate!)
Otherwise, the comment about kbin’s active users … kbin doesn’t track active users AFAIK (I’ve read ernest say as much) … it’s more or less the same as their total user count +/- weird variation.
@vamp07 Yea, I agree, I think the combination done in kbin will be what some people want while others will prefer the relative focus and simplicity of lemmy.
Curious why you think that (I’m inclined to agree FWIW).

Are you suggesting kbin<->lemmy migrations? Neither even have inter-instance migrations, right?
Or, kbin<>masto, microblogs platforms?!
So going to that instance, and going to its list of federated communities (https://parapheum.com/communities/listing_type/All/page/1) shows a few sizeable ones. Also note the instance’s description (see https://parapheum.com/) which is basically to distribute the server load without any commitment to any particular kind of community.
So, could be full of lurkers, or parallel accounts created to avoid server overload that will be soon dropped. So probably some bloat in these numbers, as there are for other platforms too

Lemmy has a search facility (a magnifying glass icon, generally in the top right, or perhaps behind a menu).
And it’s not bad, though rough around the edges I’d say.
It will only be specific to what your instance “can see”, which is all the activity in all the communities that all its users subscribe to.
So, no “meta search”. But it’s an interesting idea given how it was part of Reddit’s value.
No reason why one couldn’t be made on top of the network though
@Odo Interesting. Lemmy is somewhat strict in its definition of “active user”. You must post to be “active”, so all lurkers aren’t counted.
I’m not even sure commenting counts toward being “active”, though I’d guess it does.
So user growth without growth in “active users”, especially on smaller servers, is plausible.

Nothing happened, AFAIK. It’s just that mastodon dominates amongst the microblogging. For many, mastodon is the replacement for twitter.
If, somehow, the twitter migration were distributed more evenly between mastodon and akkoma, I think we’d have a different fediverse. More awareness and appreciation of platform and feature diversity and quality inter-operation, I’d guess.

Oh, absolutely, something that they really deserve credit on TBH, compared to what’s going on over here with mastodon.social.
AFAICT, they’ve been friendly with #kbin too … it looks like they’re sharing this growth, which is nice for the same reasons.
Imagine if #akkoma and #mastodon shared the twitter migration.

Lemmy.world breaking out in front on MAU (which is the more meaningful metric right now as lemmy.ml certainly has collected a number of dead accounts over time).
Kbin.social is the other big instance, but I’m not on there much and don’t know how active it is.
Otherwise, probably one of if not the biggest experiments being run on the #threadiverse right now is how groups/communities run when decentralised at substantial scale.
Spread over instances will create more duplication/parallel communities than on Reddit, but will this be a good thing for diversity, or, a turn off with similar engagement issues some twitter migrants found here.
ATM, my feeling is, provided the UX is good enough, that it will be a pleasant balance.

Honestly not sure the situation is nearly as clean cut as a blanket statement like this makes it out … and honestly, for an ecosystem that’s still trying to get off of the ground and work itself out … the virality of “bad news” really ought to be avoided.
I could be mistaken, but the deal is that the devs have a political position, understand that not everyone shares it, and encourage new communities/instances and forks.
Really vital point you make there. It illustrates the ways in which a dominant platform shapes the ecosystem to be more like it, especially when the ecosystem is one of interconnectedness.
Calckey offers full post migration from mastodon to calckey. Great. But mastodon doesn’t offer the reverse. Ok, don’t use mastodon, that’s shit. But everyone is already using mastodon and have their posts there. Ok, stay on mastodon then, safer!

Yea … it’s pretty easy get upset and negative about these things in the moment, especially if things get cleaned up.
But yea, calckey.social was always a kinda beta thing, which was perfectly fine for a young/experimental platform.
But this past week or two has really cemented its beta status and put a wet blanket on any excitement and good-will the platform had.
I kept my mastodon main anyway, but its things like this kinda reveal why mastodon is dominant. Platforms be tricky

Yea. Generally a good demonstration of how the promise of the fediverse isn’t really there yet.
Lemmy does groups and mastodon does users with neither really understanding the other.
I think there’s more scope for lemmy to cover the user side of social media than mastodon the groups side. Kbin is an example of a continuing effort to do that.
If some keen devs got involved, I’d suspect lemmy could add some good user based functionality.The core devs have recognised it’d be good.
