Thanks for sharing this, very informative read. I might have to go through that Cohost article when I have a spare hour haha

Been using Kagi for over a year and it’s gotten to the point where I forget I’m using it, which is peak search engine for me. Not sure I agree with their big new focus being AI and a browser, but as a $5/month search engine it’s perfect.

My concern is just how disposable and unrepairable Chromebooks are. So much e-waste generated every 2-3 years.

They’re already starting to clamp down on sideloading. I use Aurora Store out of principle, but it’s getting more and more common that apps will refuse to launch if not downloaded from the Play Store. I get the risk of sideloading maliciously modified banking apps or whatever, but surely you could just compare a checksum or something?

The argument I agree with is that Python is the best language to learn if it’s your only language, and Java is the best first language if you’re going to learn others. The syntax from Java is shared across so many other languages and it forces you to learn about things like objects and types. You could make an argument for C or C++ but Java’s handholding is more beginner friendly imo

It can help with standardization and some security benefits to run things in the JVM, part of the reason it’s so popular in enterprise
Well, sounds like I have six weeks to spin up Jellyfin side-by-side with Plex to see if I can get away with not paying the $120 ransom…

I moved from Firefox on Android to Brave recently because it was too often breaking sites or taking much longer to load. Firefox just added a report broken sktes feature to the app though so maybe I’ll go back. Be the change I want to see in the world and whatnot.
As far as I can tell you can’t donate to Firefox specifically. I would if I could.
I bet most of the money goes to Mullvad because they run the actual VPN service. Mozilla just does the front end and user management.

I’d be okay with sites showing me unintrusive non targeted ads, but since it’s all or nothing I choose nothing.

Thank you, very cool! If/when Discord gets bad enough that I try to convince my friends to jump ship, I’ve been thinking about whether Matrix or Revolt or something else would be the next place to migrate to.
I guess you would need a lot of proxies. And they probably need to be on Googles good side to keep their VPN extension in Chrome

I’m sure part of it is to stop paying Denuvo the $20,000+ a month fee to keep it active, but regardless I’m glad they’re doing the right thing.
I wonder if they’re using the (paid) Google and Brave APIs, and are running Leta as a loss leader, or if they have some way to get around it
I’m loving my Framework, have Mint on there. Thinkpads are also well regarded I believe

I switched to Nobara Linux at the end of last year, and for the most part when I consider how often I’d have to fix Windows stuff, it’s not that much more work. Still not the same though, and I keep a Windows partition around for certain stuff even though I groan having to load into it

That’s a shame, that was the studio that worked on Guitar Hero Live. I kind of liked that game

Nord has been on my shit list ever since one of their servers got physically penetrated and they tried to slide it under the rug rather than notify users
I was just looking at my usage actually and I never go above 100 in a month. I have to use work provided search and AI for work so that keeps the number down. That sucks, $5 is kind of the most I like to spend on any non critical subscription per month
