Yeah, I wonder how many people are reserving this who plan to run Windows and their windows gaming PC setup on this. I think they might end up being disappointed. As an upgrade to my Roku TV, hacked 2ds, and T430 it should be a nice upgrade though.

I’m really excited about this. My computing setup at home is an old optiplex that I turned into a lightweight homeserver, a T430 running Arch I use for computing, TV with built in Roku, and a couple old handhelds for gaming (my preferred way to play games). I’ve been looking for an upgrade to most of these and considering getting a 7" tablet to install linux on.

So, this meets pretty much all of my criteria. I plan on using this as my daily driver desktop with a dock, a second dock connected to my TV for Kodi and media watching, handheld mode for gaming, SD cards with alternate boot for emulation station, toss it in my purse and have a touchscreen linux tablet, etc. All for <$800 (factoring in USB-C docks I’ll need to get).

I can see that this isn’t for everyone, and I’m not the intended audience, but it hits so many points for me even if it only halfway lives up to the hype. There are a few downsides: only supports one external monitor at a time, I’m a little concerned about heating (noise and throttling), using it as a laptop with a small external keyboard in a coffee shop will be a bit odd (I don’t do this much though), and upgrade-ability is not really present. Still, I’m super stoked and think it’s worth the money for me.

Does this not actually centralize moderation with a few who have “reputation and trust”?

I think there are some features of what you cover which would be good. Like I think having opt-in federation with maybe a little flag that lets you know that other servers you federate with have intentionally defederated with the instance. Still, I would want to be watchful that we don’t moderate by populism. It is possible that a minority group could start an instance and get ostracized.

Also, each instance has slightly different moderation needs. Perhaps your instance is not OK with people posting sexual content on the public TL, but I welcome it. Both positions are fine, and I could understand why your instance might defederate from a group that posts sexual content, but that doesn’t mean that my instance should to. I don’t know if a centralized set of moderators could make those decisions for a whole network of diverse instances.

Because the servers that were banned were extreme right-wing instances not socialist instances. If a club I go dance at lets socialists in, but tells nazi punks to fuck off I think that’s a pretty cool club. If a bar lets in nazis I won’t go there.

First they came for the Nazis, and I did not speak out, because I’m not a Nazi. Everything was pretty cool after that, because taking away a platform from people who advocate for genocide is totally reasonable and a good call.

I think we’ll need some apps to generate artificial and randomized dust and scratches.

There are a handful of cases where a VPN might be a better choice than Tor for certain traffic. Such as using bit torrent or keeping traffic off of Tor exit nodes as they are monitored more heavily.

It’s also useful to have a home network VPN for local services, but I don’t think that is what OP is needing.

I definitely wouldn’t feel safe on an instance that tolerates fascists and/or racists.

Personally, I don’t use the label “tankie” to describe people. I just think it’s outdated and doesn’t really relay where I might have disagreements with authoritarian leftists and staunch nation state supporters. Where I don’t feel welcome on some other lemmy instances has more to do with those authoritarian leftists and staunch nation state supporters not making enough room for a nuanced discussion about the balance and tension of individual autonomy and collective action (where does the liberation/rights of the individual end and the state/commune begin?). I don’t really feel like I would be silenced here for exploring that nuance though.

I really like this project. I think there are some areas for improvement in community building tools and moderation, but the software isn’t even at 1.0 yet. So, that makes sense. It will be interesting to see how the structure of the software influences community building. How will the up vote aggregation affect what is seen? How will that differ between instances?

As far as the politics of this instance. I’ve found it fine as an anarchist. As lemmy spreads and there are more instances I might find a more fitting home, but I feel welcome here in all my identities for now. There are certainly other lemmy instances I don’t feel welcome at so :woman shrugging: .

It would be pretty cool to have a federated identity service. So, you could use webfinger to query the identity server and then get directed to federated endpoints on other servers depending on the requested service.
