I assume you’re just getting into Linux? Avoid Chromebooks for this (running linux as beginner) - there are ways of running Linux, but they require some tricks dpending on the model.

Good luck everyone, it’s going to be tough moderating something like that.
Use a dumbphone for calls and an Android phone with prepaid sim for stupid apps that modern life demands. They stay frozen most of the time (Insular). I also used to run degoogled LineageOs, but very often bank apps and anything involved with finance would bitch about it and refuse to function, so I had no other option but stock firmwares.
I get the context, but in case of neighborhoods (and internet communities) the quality of people’s residing is also important. I’d rather have quiet neighbors saying hello instead of some drug peddlers blasting loud music every night.
What? Can’t you afford to drink a Fruitty Pumpkin Spice Kombucha Latte Macchiato Frapuccino with Extra Cream and Sprinkled Caramelized Candybites™ at your local $overpricedHipsterFranchise everyday?
Catering to the corporate is how Microsoft gets their future customers. Office workers learn to function in MS ecosystem to pay the bills. When they are home, they dont want to struggle to make things work - they already know windows and office, so that will be the path of least resistance.
Chromebooks/ChromeOS have been very helpful in that regard. Grandparents that don’t do anything beyond a web browser? I replaced the struggling windows partition with a CloudReady install. Zero complaints. Google account syncing also takes care of backups, so no worries on that either.
Now I am worried about Chromiun’s near monopoly and how Firefox barely manages to make a dent in browser surveys, but I am not going to preach about web browsers and listen to their complaints every time a website coded by an unpaid intern refuses to do something properly on this ‘Mozarella Foxfire’ thing. I can afford to do that in my own time. They shouldn’t have to.

Emphasis on “in some cases, these unauthorized copies are the only record of a given play”. This already happened with radio/television, and will happen with all sort of digital media as future historians scramble to study the late 20th century and early 21st century’s internet culture.

A practical advise. A lot of websites refuse to open on Librewolf because of an OSCP related error, a lot. You can disable that in config if you don’t want to scratch your head every time.
Oh, why people like you weren’t when I was trying to teach IT as volunteer?
As soon as I mentioned web browsers and “yes, the internet is much more than youtube, tiktok, instagram - they’re websites, but not all of internet”… I never knew what a mix of tech-illiteracy and helicopter parenting would be like.

It’s a long shot, but does anyone know if CJK languages (not romanizations) are supported in any of these?
I missed something like this since a similar project (Secbrowser by Kicksecure) got abandoned. All the security and privacy enhancements of Tor Browser, but without the Onion network. It also helps legitimize the Tor Browser/Mullvad Browser’s fingerprint.

New gTLDs have been released constantly since ICANN dropped the restriction. Also consider that a lot of Lemmy instances are run by individuals as a side project. That means they’ll reuse or nab whatever cool sounding domain they can get to spin up their new instance as quickly as possible. Corporate websites might pause and consider a more “marketable” domain.
Personal theory of mine is *.itjust.works meant to stand for “It Just Works” until they decided to give this Lemmy thing a go.

I switch between subscribed and all sometimes. Finding new communities is nice.

It’s true, the front page, as it stands, is awful. I have to filter out so many trump/elon crap and (for nsfw accounts) so many sexual fetishes I didn’t even know it existed. “Active” and “Hot” are infested with (sorry guys) low effort memes, and I have to click for “top 6 hours” or “top 12 hours” for something that starts looking interesting. Yes, I know the big R and other social media have the same problem, but that’s not the point.
Now, this is where the content “sorting algorithm” becomes a thing to “boost engagement”… but sure we can do better?
Personally, I would like to see more active posts from small communities or instances over most populous ones. Self-posts, even better. What if there was a user preference for frontpage sorting?
Problem is that languages get in the way. Some are pretty similar like 15 ago (Spanish) being 15 Aug (English), but 1 ene (Spanish) aren’t that similar to 1 Jan (English).
And for the usual “But English is used everwhere! I live in X!” crowd: NO, it isn’t. Not everything you see as an “expat” is the same as the actual locals with their own language.
Thanks for the encouragement. I suppose I can make a macro or a temporary marker to replace them for proper syntax like you described when I’m in a hurry? I first have to transform some of the notes I’m using to org-mode syntax first so I can get used to this.
It really depends on where you are located. Some jurisdictions allow activation of SIM cards without personal info, some do not. Then there’s the matter of physical and financial surveillance.
But seriously, unless you are actually that desperate for some reason, why would you have a hobo pay for a burner phone? Wouldn’t that being recorded on camera be more suspicious?
