As someone who has done a lot of distro hopping in the past, I’ve found that going for a stable release that is widely used as a daily driver is superior for gaming than “gaming specific” linux distros, largely on the basis that the gaming distros have routinely had buggy UIs, driver issues, and a variety of unexpected and undesired behavioral problems tied to the array of “gaming adjacent” software installed, most of which you can install yourself with little to no effort and most of which you probably don’t want or need in the first place.

If you run Ubuntu on a production server, you better having snapd disabled.

The ideological signifying here, though, is squarely situated within the language of American politics. All Lives Matter was a reactionary counter to Black Lives Matter, a distinctly American political movement. Similarly, “both sides suck” is something which has been repeated ad nauseam about American politics. As such, the meme suggests itself that it’s about American politics. At least that’s how I’m reading it. If the OP meant it to be about Israel and Palestine, I think they could have framed it better.

This is an ancient opinion. People have been complaining about America’s two party system for literal centuries.

Sure, I generally agree with that, but that being the case we should talk about dogs purely in terms of size and weight. Big dogs (and I mean ALL big dogs) are dangerous for the same reason big people are dangerous (potentially) - it’s why weight classes exist in competitive martial arts.

Open source is great, but the reality is that closed source software is still a huge chunk of the industry. Most mobile apps are closed source. Almost everything Apple has touched is closed source. Google, Microsoft, IBM, OpenAI, etc. Closed source software development is very dominant in the industry. More so than I think Stephenson ever thought it would be.

It’s sad because he has a lot of ideas that I agree with or find interesting, like how a long time ago he thought that open source software can, and should, become the dominant mode of software development. It’s not the case in present day, of course, but it’d be nice if it were. That said, I remember having Snow Crash on my shelf for…oh, around 15 years or so and finally got around to reading it earlier this year/late last year. And oh my God that man cannot write a story. Cool, but superficial characters? Sure. An interesting setting where the world is violent and chaotic and capitalism has turned scientific advancement and private industry into a parody of itself? No breed of dog should exist because people shouldn’t intentionally breed dogs. It’s inhumane and most of them wind up in kill shelters. If you want a dog, adopt a mutt from a pound. It’ll be healthier and happier than any other dog you could get. That said, breed characteristics are something pushed by dog breeders themselves. Pitbulls are not more genetically predisposed towards biting or mauling than other breeds and the supposed “statistical data” on the subject is based around a confluence of inaccurate metrics caused by 1) people not being very good at accurately identifying dog breeds, 2) existing groups that hate pitbulls pushing bad statistics for political purposes, and 3) a self-fulfilling prophecy of pitbulls having a bad reputation and actively being sought out by people who want vicious dogs and who will treat their dogs in such a way as to encourage that behavior. And I say all of this as someone who does not own a pitbull and probably never will.
