  • the current problem with journals is that there is no money in it for authors. journals oly exist because of historical reasons, and older folks still value them.

Arxiv exists as a semi journal, which is some what cc4 (or some other cc of your choice) and that is great, but still one source.

You can just host your research papers as websites, as in just a web article, and use some vcs like github, codeberg, or self hosted forego system. That is arguably the best case.

I have a paper which is on arxiv, and my supervisor has been “polishing” it for a journal, but to me that is a useless process, because i almost never care about things like journal impact factor or h index. to me, the only thing valide is steps for reproducibility, that is, give me a recipe, and if i can recreate, then you did a great job. This could mean, for example, releasing all your raw unprocessed data.

how to handle reputation for who can review, but I think there are ways to do that and that’s beyond the scope of this post as I imagine it could get pretty complicated and would require feedback from people actually in the industry. The reviewers can submit comments and reviews back to the author via federation, but this time the process can be open instead of behind closed doors.

one of the reasons reviewers are effective is that the remain anonymous, that is why they can shit talk a lot. You would not have the slander, if you make the identity real.

I think we should not have reputation or verification, as i stated above, if you post on your own website, and not have gatekeeping. Yes a lot of the work may not meet “some standards”. but even with current system, a lot of work is published which is substandard. if we can release work in open, and colaborate as we do for open source software, thart would be the ideal thing for me. Each issue could be a literal git issue, each correction can be a pull request, and so on. Fully transparent, and somewhat resistant to whole network failing. (assuming you have local copies, you can just spin another instance, and your paper still stays onloine)

  • In our home we have “coolers” (the big kind with metal bodies and large water storage, and padded, perforforated walls). It is outside our house and blowing air inwards. We try our best to seal the area around window with lots of cardboard, fibre sheet and thermocol, and then depending on time of day, confining the space (by closing other doors in home). It is not AC cool, nor is it really effictive when it is hot (50+ C) outside, but other time it works fine. In the nights it does a pretty good job (good enough that i have caught a cold right now). When we do not want the noise, we just run the water pump, so occasional winds from outside come and are cooled by the running water. Water usage is slightly high (we usually require one filling a day, which would be 40-50 litre water i guess), but we sometimes keep cycling between pump on and off to conserve some more water. If noise is a big concern to you, you can try to basically cover whole of the front (with some sound insulating material, like fibre sheets(the polymer ones often found in packaging)) and then make some side channels for air. Or something more simple is using lighter curtains just in front of cooler. This will break the flow of air, but if you have sealed rest of the are, so air can’t leak elsewhere, then you would get air breaking its flow and flow around the obstacles and reach you, but not as loud. We do something similar, we have not covered fully, we have left partially open (60 % i guess from the middle) but to cover noise, we partially close it by window (which is kept in place by curtain over it) so we get a tighter channel of air (as it bends around the edge of window). If you stay in the channel, you get large air flow, but more noise, but if you move away from it (from my casse, even by a foot) then the noise is cut in half. The rest of the room is now cooled by this air current mixing with rest of room air. If room is large, t=you may also have to turn your ceiling fan on for this, but we do not have to.

In really peak summers (and peak hours of the day), we use ac for few hours (1-1.5 or 2) and when it gets cooler outside, fall back to cooler.

If you want to publish, please do 2 things - find a publisher which does not necessitate exclusivity (as in, you do not necessarily have to just publish something on there portal) - and secondly, make a portal of your own, and publich a duplicate copy there. This serves 2 purposes, if someone really wants to follow your work, they can just follow your website, and in case a future bait and switch happens, you have a backup of all your work.

One thing that would quickly start to happen is a lot of the smaller countries would either be forcefully taken over or be quieted down. Most countries have neighbours they do not share good relations with - and with nuclear armament - bigger of 2 could easily pose nuclear threat and have a much bigger say in their arguments. This could mean taking over contested/disputed lands or some kind of minearl deals being forcefully signed. Soon the total world country count would start to decrease purely because of this (annd would actually accelerate until a point where most countries would form coallitions with some nuclear power and sum total of power on both (or all sides in general) be roughly comparable such that no one poses a greater threat to another and not have an equal threat back at them.

  • Particularly for electric cars - you have very inflamable lithium batteris, which when spiked very hard (by something sharp), so multiple layers short circuit and well short circuits leads to fire. But batteries are at the bottom of the body, with few easily exposed areas (otherwise they would be at risk of explosions all time). I do not know what people are doing exactly, but you can use a crowbar like thing to hit the beneath posterior, until you expose the battery, and then 1 or 2 hits can do it, or you can skip this and use a smaller conventional explosive.

I would like to add this - I do not condone arson. Even if anyone wants to protest - this is not the way to do it, unless you burn your own stuff, then you are only harming environment. What i wrote is purely for educational purposes.

  • well you can try to look it up - slow acting poisons in minecraft.

on a more serious note, as others have noted heavy metal poisoning like mercury or lead.

I have another one - sulphur. Readiy available throughout ancient times, and non-toxic by itself (S8 form that is). But many of it’s compounds are toxic in varying degree. You can look its wiki page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfur) for some commonly available toxic salts, but I also have some ideas to incorporate in story - burning of sulfur (in incomplete form producing SO2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfur_dioxide). You can incorporate it very easily (someone tampered someone elses fireplace or incense sticks if we also want to hide any wierdities with flame). By itself it iis not very toxic, almost odorless, and not a strong color. It has existed even in food stored for long time due to degradation of sulfur containg organic compounds, wiki page also lists that wine this (another potential vector to supply this). When in body, it can produce H2SO3 (sulphurous acid) and by inhaling/ingesting small amounts for long time - it will gradually destroy alveoli/stomach inner lining and liver. Sulfur by itself is very cheap (you can find ores in a lot of places around the world, relatively easy to mine, also found near volcanic places), humans have used it in trying to make medicine out of it, and it has huge amount of history in alchemy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alchemical_symbol, https://www.thoughtco.com/tria-prima-three-primes-of-alchemy-603699). In fact, since it is present in humans naturally, and msot organic matter for that matter - small amount of sulfur being present in someones’ reports will not raise a special eye, and they would just be recommended to not eat food that is traditionally know to have much sulfur (for example garlics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allyl_isothiocyanate). Garlic extract can also be used to deliver large amount of isothiocynate, but this would be a seperate method of poisoning all together - it is much more lethal, so not very slow acting, but one can keep giving a dose of this below lethal dose to keep damaging liver, and a final blow sometime.

I hope you find this helpful, and I hope no villagers in minecraft are killed by this.

  • Sprout salads - Chop (finely) vegetables, and sprouts (soaked pulses, such that a small tap root appears) - mix well, add some sauce to your preference (i just add seasoning and lemon juice, you can add something like mayo, youghurt, or salsa). You can also add some crunchy element (something like fried crisps, or any favorite item) - these will serve as a different texture, and the hero element of your dish which can invite kids. Also, you can have the kids add the these, so they can feel happy in knowing what they added, and overlook veggies in salad underneath.

  • You can make “khichdi” - It is a Indian dish, but not really, it is more of a procedure - basically get anything you have (rice, pulses, any other grain, just see if they are too hard, give a wash before, and let them soak for some time), add vegies(almost anything works, my favorites are potatoes, onions, tomoto, carrots, basically whatever is available in season), add spices to taste (I mostly just add salt and pepper, but anything is fine, just add a bit more, since all stuff previously added in a taste profile sense is bland) - then cook in pressure cooker (pressure cooker is not necessary, just accelerates cooking). Depending on how much you put - this can serve you many servings. If after cooking, it is dry for you, either have it with curd or youghurt if you want something cooloing, or just add a bit of vegetable broth and warm it up. Just store it well. It is cheap, not necessarily very nutritious (it is mostly carbs, fibre, and plant protien, which is not bad, but could be better). It is easy - no culinary skills required other than knowing how to wash and cut stuff, and operating your pot.
