Definitely this. I am kind of tired of people. Mindlessly worshiping Firefox as if Mozilla doesn’t have a bad financial track on It’s CEOs giving themselves raises and also being relatively heavily funded by Google

I want to enjoy Firefox and use it as my main browser, but it just simply isn’t as polished as some of the chromium browsers out there. Which is saying a lot because Firefox used to be the number one browser 20 years ago.

They have absolutely no audience in mind when developing Firefox aside from “everyone”, and his other browsers continue implementing of a variety of different functions out of the box, Mozilla either:

A. Implemented as a browser extension that gets abandoned (split screen tabs) B. Never gets implemented at all. So a third party steps in and makes an inferior version (tab groups)

And then in some cases, removing functionality from the browser under some lame excuse like “nobody was using this”, when in fact, someone was using that feature.

All of that coupled with a lack of any transparency from the development team with something like a fleshed out road map or anything like that. Instead just a string of promises. Which would be fine and expected out of an open source project, if Mozilla wasn’t a multi-million dollar corporation.

Of course, on Lemmy, the open source federated network, everyone here will glorify and put Mozilla on a pedestal as The Lord and Savior of FOSS and the internet as a whole. When there is absolutely nothing that makes them special

Also, chromium browsers can block ads.

It’s nice to see good app security being praised. Sometimes it feels like some people on lemmy (and the fediverse) throw security to the wind.

Like one time I had heard someone over on Mastodon say that they thought that HTTPS was too overused and shouldn’t have been everywhere because it makes older apps unable to access sites and also made adblocking just ever so slightly harder.

Which yeah, I love adblockers, but I’m definitely not comfortable with all traffic having to go unencrypted just for it.

Dang, I was really hoping that they would stop using bugzilla and switch to something like GitHub/GitLab/Gitea issues instead. Perhaps also put things like feature requests there as well and have one place to contribute to Firefox

He just relies entirely on the “moral obligation” people have to use this stuff, but then doesn’t give any advice on how to convince people to actually use this stuff besides “using our abilities and the means to follow the strategy and educate others about it”. Because I’ve certainly been trying that for ages and it hasn’t worked. Of course a good amount of that stuff I don’t even think I would use. I find Protonmail encryption to be annoying in compatibility since you actually have to pay to get the desktop program to decrypt your email, Signal, and a lot of Matrix clients lack a lot of the nice messaging features that extend beyond the app itself (Like Google Assistant/Siri support). Also not sure if OP has seen the current state of using an adBlocker on the web. I’m not sure if everyday people would want to actually deal with that. I certainly can’t get my mother to use an adblocker, and whenever I try to instate pi hole onto our network, within moments, someone complains about the internet “not working correctly”.

The argument is almost always “we need to start mandating these really private things onto everyone, don’t give them any choice on it” and never “how can we make good enough things people will want to use with privacy by design?”. I look at apps like Nextcloud and home assistant that have created better experiences than what the market currently offers. And I wish that I could see more of the same with that with apps that are private by design, and can integrate well with just about anything.

Already, I see a lot of stigma around cryptocurrency. I don’t know if it’ll ever take off thanks to stuff like NFTs ruining it.

Yeah I would trust them. But I don’t think I would use them because I just find their mail service to have too much friction in a lack of interoperability with clients unless you not only pay money, but also download a whole extra program just to decrypt your email. It’s essentially a walled garden

I would definitely get a Chromebook, but only once you can change the default browser from Chrome without needing to do any weird workarounds like Android apps
