  • That is the thing, I am into what is quite a niche genre and it is very “exclusive” within the scene let alone encompassing multiple streaming platforms. Half of the stuff that gets released does so in limited runs of often 100 - 500 vinyl copies which i fucking hate personally as to me it is just the wanky scene “heads” creating a false sense of rarity to jack each other off over which tracks they own on an inferior media type in a genre that is electronic music. It is all made on computers so it isnt like digital copies dont exist.

But I digress this attitude within that scene adds another layer of a lot of the people into it being at best apathetic towards things like digital and streaming and as such everything that does get released usually does so only on Spotify. Dont get me wrong there are plenty of labels and artists that do support the digital release side of it well but even everything that is release digitally to buy won’t get released on streaming platforms.

I regularly search the libraries of alternatives but so far the selection for me does not get even close to what is released on Spotify. I try my best to buy what music I can via bandcamp and that is my primary music platform (just take a look at my post history) but I dont have a lot of money so music is not a priority for where it gets spent.

I conversely see a lot of people say what you have just said and I think that is a product of having either a more mainstream taste or just being into genres that embrace streaming more than my specific tastes. I dont believe supporting the platform will help in my case because it is down to the artists to choose what platform they are on and they generally seem to be resistant to that in the first place.

  • Good to know for the future, thanks! Did it at least supply you with a good quality flac as that is the main draw away from Spotify for me currently as I can only get 320 mp3s from Spotify.

Tidal is the only one I haven’t checked the library for so far but to be honest my expectation is low as the artists I listen to never list tidal as a streaming service they use. Mainly Spotify and rarely deezer is what I tend to see.

YouTube music has great selection but trash quality.

  • This is my pet fucking hate. Within the genre I download / share so many people have all their files private and they want you to give them shit like bandcamp vouchers and stuff like that to have access to their locked files. It fucking boils my piss and it goes against the whole point of piracy as I see it.

I purposefully block all these fucking cunts, all my files are wide open to everyone and I am constantly getting a lot of new releases so if they want to lock their files they can’t have the privilege of sharing in my stuff, utter pieces of shit.

  • Chav -

“A person in Britain of a type stereotypically known for engaging in aggressively loutish behavior especially when in groups and for wearing flashy jewelry and athletic casual clothing (such as tracksuits and baseball caps)”

That is a more accurate description, class isn’t really anything to do with it, it is more about the behaviour, attitude and style.

  • I have this same problem as my sister loves all those kinds of shows, particularly the older seasons can be a real struggle to find.

I’m have only ever really used torrents before and was struggling to find a lot of things or like you say they stall out or only have random episodes and not complete seasons that are still being shared.

I have had the most luck with looking into and getting onto newsgroups to find this kind of thing. I have been using geeknzb and have found a lot of things there that I hadn’t been able to even find dead torrents of so would recommend looking into that for some things.

That other thing I have had luck with but is very time consuming is dailymotion. There are a lot of full episodes of the older reality stuff on there. The search function is dog shit and you’ll need to scroll through a lot of irrelevant results and repeat episodes trying to find a full season of things but when desperate I will go there and using a generic downloaded I found just by searching, painstakingly go through, find the episodes and then plug the links into the download site.

The quality can be quite questionable and if you want subtitles you’ll probably be out of luck but my sister will watch 240p and be quite happy with it so doesn’t really care.

Good luck, reality TV fucking sucks to find xD

  • I won’t discount hardware issues but my experience is consistent across 6 different phones now so make of that what you will.

All of this aside I still wholeheartedly recommend bandcamp, I still think it is best for both variety of things available (particularly for niche genres) as well as artists actually getting paid.

The app still works absolutely fine I just would never describe it as “great” personally, it is just annoying because a lot of the issues I have could be resolved fairly easily and have been present for many many years at this point.

  • For the most part it will play albums fine until it doesn’t and won’t load the next track getting stuck in a perpetual loading loop and requires being restarted. That is my experience anyway and whilst it doesn’t happen all the time it is often enough to just be a little annoying.

For the most part though playback is decent and so if that is your primary use I can see that it would seem like an OK app.

If however you do a lot of your discovery and new music listening on there as I do your opinion would probably be quite different. The search function is dog shit and navigation is horrendous, there are so many illogical decisions. Also the fact that if you click a bandcamp link within the app itself it opens it in a browser rather than opening it in app is absolutely infuriating and has been that way forever.

Unfortunately qobuz still has a some what lack lustre library for my specific niche genre choice but it is getting better and I keep checking it so hopefully soon it will have caught up, although their search is a bit shit as well clumping artists that have the same name but are certainly not the same artist together as one.

  • Reflectacles?

I’ve had two pairs of these I bought years ago but unfortunately lost one pair. Chatted with the guy when I bought them and he seemed like a sound guy. I hope being sold out means his business is doing well!

Only issue I have with them is they aren’t really wide enough and I have a small head. Not that they fit badly, they aren’t too tight but the design looks too small on my face that it looks a bit comedic tbh.

They are also really nice to drive in at night as they stop you from being blinded by the absurdity that is modern headlights.
