I’m more individualistic and self-contained than almost anyone I know - to the point that it does alienate me somewhat - but I still get a frisson from public speaking, and I still seek approval from the masses online. The real reasons I have left all microblogging untouched are two things. McLuhan said “the medium is the message”. A medium that rewards brevity to a maximum is not one that thinks people should be talking a lot. It’s not a medium for communication so much as it is a medium for displays. All you get to do is strike a verbal pose on an infinite stage of other attention seekers.

That’s just it. We can acknowledge the commercial impulse, without condoning it or placing it above the art.
They have been irrational longer than you’ve been an investor. They have become exceedingly efficient at it.
That’s fair enough - the hill I’m trying to die on is the idea that nobody should be allowed to tell artists what they can or can’t do, whether it’s for politics, ideology, morals, or money. Let art simply be, and let us talk about whether and how it succeeds. Enough art has been prescribed or prohibited for long enough.
