It’s something that can definitely be felt.

The Internet’s early naive idealism was quickly overrun once capitalism caught up and figured out how to use it for it’s own nefarious purposes. It’s become corporate walled-gardens and filled with paper-thin communities, making it harder to find rich conversations and interesting topics for people to join in on together.

For all the issues places like the fediverse can have, it’s nice that there are still attempts being made to make the web feel more genuine.

It’s dying, not dead

I’ve yet to have that problem. Who are these people speaking to bots and not realising it?

I mean sure, I can see someone engaging with a bot generated post and maybe not realising it’s bot generated, but I don’t think there is an endemic of other consistently interacting with a bot and not realising it.

Email spam is a good example. Spam makes up the vast majority of email, but not the majority of email interactions.

Probably some truth to it, at least on some platforms… especially ones obsessed with selling high user counts and “engagement” numbers to advertisers.

iirc a significant chunk of twitter accounts are bots, like over 20%. Probably similar amounts for youtube, reddit, and facebook.

I hate discord, but the fact that discord servers can do their own vetting and application process, and weed out the chatbots and AI noise, has probably contributed to many of them having a closer feeling of “community” than a lot of other platforms.

I def don’t think its a hidden conspiracy though. There are a ton of companies working in the AI space, trying things out, and the big tech firms don’t care about having actual people on them, they care about what they can sell to advertisers.

I always observe how in youtube comments nothing close to an original thought surfaces. Everyone always has the same generic reaction to things. Makes me feel very solipsistic

I think this is largely a reflection of what kind of people youtube comment sections attract. Its a system of broadcast validation where people looking for some innocent attention and validation may make the same emulated, generic comment to get some sense of intellectual significance.

I think it’s more the way the youtube algorithm works. It sorts “top comments” by default, seemingly even removing comments if they don’t get enough likes to reach a threshold. I’ve had an issue before where a video shows no comments even when it says there are 3 comments. I switch to “new” and the three comments show up

Edit: But I see what you are saying, the algorithm definitely plays into that attention seeking mentality

As the prevalence of bots and AI systems continues to increase, people may begin to lose trust in online interactions altogether.

I’ve noticed on Lemmy that a few users that disagree with me politically occasionally accuse me of being a bot. Not even a paid shill, but instead a piece of AI generating text. This possibility is already oncoming.

The irony is that you are replying to what very much looks like a lightly edited ChatGPT output text ;)

Based on this definition, I’m gonna say it’s obviously crap but contains kernels of truth and is amusing as a shaggy dog tale. Like my favorite urban legend: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/kfc-mutant-chickens/

This has resulted in a sense of detachment and frustration for many

I don’t experience this part. By definition, neither do the people I connect with.

So the premise seems to be based on a very flawed foundation

This assumes the level of competence never before seen in any government, ever. In other words, classic conspiracy theory, aka bullshit.
