Is the vid good? It was recommended to me as well but I didn’t want to spend 35 min on a vid about a platform that I know nothing about

I know it’s unpopular, but I think some of the points are made in bad faith. Of course I don’t support Roblox as a company, who would, but a large part of the criticism is aimed at what Roblox users experience as part of completely unofficial, random Discord servers they were invited to through the game.

It’s not Roblox’ fault that some kids fall for scammers or get mistreated by non-staff on unofficial, unsupported platforms.

And I don’t think Roblox should try to lock down their services and control third party media. That would be wayy overextending their welcome and manifest them as essentially a Big Brother type company.

If some kids want to develop games together in a group chat, that is none of the concern of Roblox.

And look: why is nobody criticizing literally any MMO, or Minecraft, or LittleBigPlanet, or any other creative game for it? All of those have guilds, and developers groups, and in the case of Minecraft, they also build legal companies to develop major games and mods and everything. But somehow, that’s A-OK.

I believe this entire outrage is manufactured because Roblox is perceived as a kids’ game and that’s a great way to spark outrage online.

This point is explicitly addressed in the video though. Roblox the company chose to close down their own forums (to save costs) and this necessarily drives children to other places where they fall victims to scammers and worse. By not offering an venue with sufficient oversight they are complicit in the problem.

Centralization is a bad idea and enables Roblox as a platform to control what is and isn’t going down in private chats of children. Isn’t that arguably worse?

Having your own forum with better oversight does not prevent children from using other communication channels too. But it makes for a safer default and I think this is a reasonable expectation for a game that caters to very young children.
