I am not totally in favor of this exact idea, but it seems worth thinking further about.

I think the per-server nature of it is key. Maybe at most trusting lists from servers the admin explicitly approves. If this were universal nazis would game it with bots.

This sort of already exists on other services such as Usenet it’s called the web of trust, where if you don’t like something or it is spam or hate then you mark it as such and it doesn’t show up to other users as much, the more it is marked as bad the less it shows up.

Yeah, in fact this is how up and down voting on this very site works. It just is mostly instance specific and maybe the above idea is a starting point to expand this concept to cross instance federation.

Edit: like the algorithm to calculate how high a post is shown on the feed gets an additional parameter of how much posts in general from that instance are up or down voted (looking from your instance’s perspective only).

Oh yes I like that idea a lot, cross instance would be great!

i think this has been done before with freenets WOT (web of trust) it is defiantly a bad idea ive seen people get down voted for no reason and if you dont know what freenet is heres a link to it https://freenetproject.org/ i dont recommend you use it is very old and nasty and the develpers are total grammar nazis they will piss on you hard if you miss a single period and i mean pretty hostel about it to

Sure posts gets down-voted for all sorts of things, but in aggregate they do describe the general majority sentiment of the users of one instance. If you dislike that sentiment, you are probably better off moving to a different server. But for those that stay it can be a useful metric to grade content from other servers.
