China has ordered government offices to replace foreign-branded PCs and associated operating systems with alternatives that can be locally maintained. This includes dumping Windows in favor of Linux.

Let’s hope open hardware advances quickly now. This quantum bottleneck should take care of things.

It would be lovely to have computer electronic equipment easily distributed - at least they wouldn’t cut off supply this way.

Are there any other socialist countries using Linux? I know Cuba does.

Oh yeah I forgot about Red Star OS. (Probably because it gets demonized by western cultures because <sarcasm> 1984 authoritarian government.</sarcasm>)

So that leaves two socialist countries that don’t use Linux:

  • Vietnam
  • Laos

Laos could literally just make LaOS, I wanna see that

Laotion Linux 🥺

I want to one up you, China should make MaOS, just to trigger Western iPhone kids.

oh fuck yes

Turkey also had it’s own Linux Distro Pardus, until a pro-US mafia destoyed it.

What makes you think it was destroyed? It appears that packages were updated in both their stable (Debian bullseye-based) and oldstable (buster-based) releases just yesterday.

Yes, it had it’s own init system as well, also written in Python. It was a great scientific experiment. I’m sad Pardus died. The community tried to keep it going as Pisi Linux, but it’s hard without government support.

I’m looking forward to see what happens now with translations. Currently everything is available in English. The rest of languages are always secondary. I want to see what happens when Chinese only software and environments start to show up.

I’m already noticing chinese open software cropping up in my searches, software which only crudely supports english if at all.

What i want to see is this start to effect the demographic and the ideology of the foss movement.

I guess they will use WPS Office, and it won’t be Chinese only.

It’s better a open source alternative. Even for governments.

I agree open source must be a better choice. However, I guess the Chinese gov’t will prioritize Chinese business and acquire Kingsoft instead of using existing open-source office suites.

Yeah, they might get WPS but they will get more support and improvements by making it open source and do what every government should do, public code when it’s paid by public money. xP

this is huge.
i figure this will accelerate maintenance and development of the linux kernel and related software.
other countries would be forced to pay attention and likely adopt linux to benefit from a growing community of support.

Must shed tear from eye, China showing USA Big Tech its place in the emerging new society.

Russia also has their own distro they use for important stuff wich can be paid for, and there is a free version wich is open source I think maybe. It’s called astra linux.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word “Linux” in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.
