We should be wary of feature creep. Lemmy is a link aggregator, that’s it. I don’t see why lemmy should also have a chat feature. If you want to have a discussion outside of lemmy in a traditional chatroom, then just use Matrix/Discord/XMPP/etc.

The post is not about a chat feature, but a chat-like front end for Lemmy. A very interesting idea to be honest.

Devs said theyd prefer to leave a robust and secure chat implementation for others (Matrix) since itd require a lot of devpower to create that and they dont have a lot of time to spend, thats why they let you put your matrix account in the settings. Maybe some day if they get more help?

I guess it makes more sense, anyway I was just commenting on what they’ve previously said, but I misinterpreted a bit your idea.

while I appreciate your efforts of trying to improve lemmy, let’s not forget the advantages it has. imo a format like this is more focused than any classical chatroom can ever truly be, resembling more a bulletin board & providing a much needed alternative to the abundance of more or less chaotic group chats without any real structure, where it’s mostly the group name that sets the topic

Like this? https://github.com/h3poteto/whalebird-desktop

Pleroma also has a special activity-pub post type for chat.

But IMHO, why make a new chat system when there are already many good other options like XMPP available?

This is a really cool idea, and the fact that lemmy already uses websockets makes this very possible.

Lemmy still has a chat view within threads, and used to have a chat box that was the same thing, but replicated on the sidebar.

The main issue is that even though lemmy is live updating, the nature of comment trees make them long form, whereas chat always is flat, and sorted by time, so it feels more short form.

The fact that there are hundreds of posts, make the analogy to rooms tho, kinda difficult.

As @nutomic said we don’t have time to make something like this, but anyone else is free to. And if there’s smaller ideas from this that you think would make sense to add here, let me know.

This sounds like a really cool. I wonder what the devs will think

A feature I am really waiting for is commenting on a post from Mastodon and seeing all the posts from mastodon itself.

It sounds interesting, but we definitely dont have the time to create and maintain an additional frontend.

Thank god (… I’m afraid of feature creep too)

This would be an alternative to lemmy-ui, with minimal changes to the Rust code (if any). So theres also no need for dess or me to get involved, anyone who knows webdev could implement this. Instance admins could then install it instead of lemmy-ui, or install both side by side.

In general I would really like to see more alternative frontends, as the Lemmy backend can do a lot more than just link aggregator. Such as a traditional forum or something like stackoverflow.
