lemmy.ml is down? No problem! lemmygrad.ml is still online! In the Fediverse, the āsingle point of failureā is the internet itself.
A community dedicated to fediverse news and discussion.
Fediverse is a portmanteau of āfederationā and āuniverseā. It is a common, informal name for a federation of social network servers whose main purpose is microblogging, the sharing of short, public messages.
Getting started on Fediverse;
For devs;
Except that lemmy.ml and lemmygrad.ml are hosted on the same server and in general half of the fediverse is hosted in the Hetzner datacenters in Germanyā¦
That, and one canāt take their account to another instance easily. A little pain for some, possibly not something some would entertain, either.
I do wish there was nomadic identity in more fediverse software⦠but I donāt know if thereās a standard around that.
It would be nice if !fedivangelism@lemmy.ml was more active, my Snowden post got zero traction
Subscribed, but not clicking through to Twitter.
Without nomadic identity, people would still be affected and unable to connect to the network. Sadly itās not defined in ActivityPub (yet?)
Just to amplify this: the fediverse is not the cure-all its louder proponents seem to claim.
And again, just to remind people, I donāt have Facebook or Twitter accounts and I do have accounts on Mastodon, Lemmy, Pixelfed, and others. Iām a committed user, just not an ideologue.
If lemmy.ml goes down, the fact that lemmygrad.ml is still running is not a solution for me. I donāt have an account there. If mastodon.online goes down, the fact that ⦠say ⦠tabletop.social is still running is meaningless. My identity is on mastodon.online.
If the very identity could be somehow federated, this would be a different story, naturally.
Thanks for elaborating my point.
Itās sad that Zot, the only protocol that supports nomadic identity, is rather unpopular in comparison with ActivityPub.
Standardizing on fedi capabilities is something that needs to happen at the SocialHub community, by writing and agreeing on a Fediverse Enhancement Proposal (FEP) for it. SocialHub is the place for technologists who build the fediverse. Unfortunately thereās little focus on evolving the protocols and open standards, as most federated app devs spend their time in their own projects. I encourage anyone interested in fedi building to join as SocialHub member.
I think that the fediverse is not as mature as other platforms, but it seams really freaking cool.
Someday we will have our dreamed platform.
