A community dedicated to fediverse news and discussion.
Fediverse is a portmanteau of âfederationâ and âuniverseâ. It is a common, informal name for a federation of social network servers whose main purpose is microblogging, the sharing of short, public messages.
Getting started on Fediverse;
For devs;
As i often say:
Each Node has to bring itâs own xmpp-server. When you log in to your mastodon, friendica or what else, you are instantely logged in in this xmpp-server.
The fediverse-id is also the xmpp-jid.
In the contact you can just click on âchatâ and you will be connected with this xmpp-account.
Conversejs or jsxc bring such small-chat-windows as you know from facebook.
The roster is your contact-list.
AND conversations allows you, to add your fediverse-chat-account as additional account⌠so you can use it on your smartphone without being logged in in the fediservice.
Xmpp has a small footprint. So itâs ideal. Mucs are also possible for groupchats.
If it is preconfigured, and easy to install (look at snikket!), there is instantely a secure chat in the fediverse.
Why XMPP and not matrix?
I know far too little about the implementations to judge about it.
Matrix server seems hard to run with very high resource usage. Xmpp is very lightweight. Not sure if xmpp federates.
Xmpp is THE federating chat⌠since more than 20 yearsâŚ
i know it has many flaws, but wouldnât a drop-in implementation of matrix be perfect here? at the very least better than making your own protocol
Oh god no.
The fediverse is not suited for E2EE IM.
If you require secrecy, anonimity or privacy, use something dessigned for it.
Did you read the whole article and the comments below it ? The blog author is not a beginner programmer and wrotes that when the source code of this can be improved, people should do so.
Isnât matrix technically fediverse?
Matrix is a federated IM platform. But it does not use ActivityPub, they use their own protocol.
I have mixed feelings regarding matrix.
@SrEstegosaurio A bit OT, but whatâs not to like about Matrix? Iâm curious as I was seriously considering to try it out.
For me, the biggest turndown is the way they handle metadata
Kinda makes sense yeah
My take away from the headline is âhint hint, go to co-hostâ LOL. See you all new kids trying new things! But bye! Iâll be here if you need anything that I canât help with.
